IAIA celebrates Earth Day
IAIA's Student Sustainability Leadership (SSL) Program will celebrate Earth Day with three days of activities beginning April 21. The SSL Program is an internship that allows students to collaboratively build knowledge and skills to make the institution more environmentally responsible.
Those involved in SSL have supported recycling on campus, created a compost garden, as well as encouraged the use of more environmentally-friendly cleaning solutions, among other projects.
The campus has also made sustainability a priority by placing it in the strategic plan, Vision 2017. The campus has also moved toward becoming more evironmentally-friendly with the construction of LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design buildings that follow energy efficiency standards. IAIA President Dr. Robert Martin has also joined other college presidents across the nation by signing the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment, a compact to develop student environmental leaders and a plan to reduce harmful emissions from campus.
Other departments like the bookstore have bought items such as washable tin dishes, To-Go Ware, and utensils to encourage less waste.

IAIA receives new ambassador
IAIA will receive a new student ambassador Friday, April 11. The IAIA ambassador serves as a student representative for the Institute at various functions. The ambassador represents IAIA by creating and strengthening positive relationships with the greater community through educational and service activities.
Due to a flight delay, Tatanka Means will no longer host the event. Emmett "Shkeme" Garcia (Santa Ana/Jemez Pueblos) will play guitar and entertain audiences with IAIA Student Adrian Wall (Jemez Pueblo).

- Dr. Ann Filemyr, IAIA's college dean also known as "Dean Ann," has launched her latest book, Love Enough, a collection of poems that explore the myriad possibilities for love. This is Filemyr's fifth book of poetry. She was awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2012 Robinson Jeffers Tor House Poetry Award for an earlier version of the title poem, Love Enough. Filemyr launched her book April 6 at op cit books in Santa Fe.
- Where do items we no longer want or use go when we are done with them? Do we really throw away trash or does it just move from place to place? Life Out of Balance,a student designed and built installation that openned April 4, explores these questions as students learn about large-scale installation art and collaboration. The work is based on Koyaanisqatsi, a series of time-lapsed films contrasting landscapes and urban life by filmmaker Godfrey Reggio, who gave permission to IAIA students to use his film in the background.
