artist Dale Chihuly speaks at IAIA
Internationally acclaimed artist Dale Chihuly will have a free public lecture at IAIA on Sept. 27.
Chihuly will speak about some of his most iconic projects and installations, including Chihuly Over Venice and Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the IAIA auditorium.
Chihuly is credited with revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium from the realm of craft to fine art. He is renowned for his ambitious architectural installations around the world in historic cities, museums and gardens.
In 1974, he set up a glass "hot shop" in an old barn and taught at IAIA. His time at the Institute inspired him to begin one of his series, the Navajo Blanket Cylinders, in which glass threads are fused around the surface of blown-glass cylinders. He continues to support IAIA today with art donations for the annual IAIA Benefit Dinner and Auction.

IAIA's Oct. 19 Open House will feature Native Foods

October Open House featuring Native foods
IAIA will host the annual Open House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 19
featuring Native foods. The Institute will revive a tradition dating back to the '70s when IAIA presented Indian Foods Day at the Santa Fe Indian School campus to bring the community and school together to share traditions and cultural experiences.
IAIA staff, students and faculty will prepare various cultural favorites, including chile stews, salmon, and various deserts and breads. The celebration will include art demonstrations, games and music.
The organizing committee is looking for staff, faculty and student volunteers to serve as cooks, greeters, tour guides, servers, runners, clean- up crew and other support positions. Contact organizer Janey Potts at [email protected].

alumni represent Native America at China Expo; SF Asian Restaurant hosts fundraiser
IAIA alumni Linda Lomahaftewa (Hopi-Choctaw), Melissa Cody (Navajo) and Steve LaRance (Hopi-Assiniboine) will be the first Native American artists to participate in the West Lake International Expo on Traditional Craftsmanship Oct. 17 - 20 in the Hangzhou. They will be displaying and selling their art at the event held under the auspices of UNESCO and the China National Center for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage. IAIA President Dr. Robert Martin worked with the two international coordinators of this expo, Kevin Zheng, the owner of the Asian Restaurant in Santa Fe, and Ying Zhang, a poet and the first Chinese student at IAIA, to identify the three IAIA alumni participants. "This will be a great opportunity to raise the awareness of IAIA and its talented alumni in China and on an international level," Martin said. The Chinese Organizing Committee will cover expenses in China, however the group will have to pay for airfare. Zheng will host a fundraiser for the IAIA alumni at his Asian Restaurant, 2400 Cerrillos Road, on September 13 - 15, and will contribute 25 percent of the proceeds to cover travel expenses for the artists. A silent art auction will also be held for patrons to bid on art donated by the artists, Zheng and others. For more information about the fundraiser, call 983-3600.

The IAIA community will have an opportunity for input as IAIA revises its brand structure, image and messaging created five years ago. One question that comes up is what is IAIA colors - turquoise or red?

IAIA revises its branding and messaging
The Marketing and Communications Department has started a project to look at IAIA's branding and image. The move is in accordance with Vision 2017, a campuswide strategic plan, which calls for improving communications, and developing or revising marketing and communications policies and procedures. More information about Vision 2017 can be seen here. The department is engaging all stakeholders - students, faculty, staff, board members, alumni, donors and our friends of the IAIA community - in this process. Although IAIA's branding involves imagery, it's more than colors or logos: it's speaking with one voice, releasing a unified message about IAIA's mission and purpose. The assessment will also help the entities explore how we are seen by and present ourselves to the world. The assessment will also help IAIA, the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and Center for Lifelong Education become more unified. The department is hosting several meetings for various groups. IAIA's 2013 benefit dinner and auction a success - thank you for your support!
The IAIA Board of Trustees, the IAIA Foundation Board of Directors, and the whole IAIA community thank the sponsors, supporters, organizers and volunteers for their generous participation in the recent 2013 Benefit Dinner and Auction. students utilize old Nizhoni center
A group of students is utilizing the campus Nizhoni Early Head Start Center formerly run by Presbyterian Medical Services for a family study area. The students said they needed a welcoming place for them and their children after Presbyterian moved off the IAIA campus this summer because of federal cuts.
The students have formed the Family Study Organization and eventually would like to create a daycare service while they are in class. The organization has received some childcare items from an anonymous daycare owner in Albuquerque who recently closed her business.
The organization is still seeking books, bookshelves, cooking utensils, art supplies, a Mac computer, first aid kits, and a TV and DVD player, among other items. To donate, contact Jacquelyn Smith at [email protected], or Tahnee Ahtoneharjo-Growingthunder, [email protected].

- IAIA senior and Cinematic Arts and Technology major Kyle Joe's short video was recently screened during Indian Market. Cultural Dimensions was accepted into the Future Voices of New Mexico film festival in collaboration with the National Museum of the American Indian as part of their Emerging Artist category. More than 150 people were in the audience for the screening of his film.
- IAIA senior and New Media Arts Graphic Interactive Design major Louva Hartwell will receive the prestigious 2013 Princess Grace Film Honoraria. The Princess Grace Foundation will support Hartwell's documentary thesis film, the herstory of lesbian Indigenous women in the in the LGBT rights and Two Spirit movements. Hartwell has been working with Cinematic Arts and Technology Artist in Residence Rachael Nez on the application for this award and will continue to work with Nez as independent study toward the completion of her documentary film.
- The IAIA Fitness Center has a brand new "Mondo" workout floor. The Fitness Center will also sponsor a walk near campus at 4 p.m. Fridays. The center is open Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; Friday 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- The IAIA Indigenous Liberal Studies Department is convening an interdisciplinary conference March 13 - 15, 2014, exploring the idea of "Progress." The Indigenous Intervention on Progress is being convened to bring forth ideas related to the Indigenous experience with the concept of "Progress" in culture, literature, philosophy, history, politics, economics, film, television, art, music, social theory, and business. One-page concept papers and panel proposals are due Dec. 2. Click here for more information.
- IAIA's Center for Lifelong Education Tribal Liaison Ramus Suina has retired after 30 years of service at IAIA. Suina held several positions, including admissions director and recruiter. Suina is also an IAIA alumnus.
- Congratulations to Charmay Allred, an IAIA Foundation Board member, who will receive the 2013 Santa Fe Mayor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts on October 10. Allread is a founding member of the IAIA Foundation Board, which was created in 2010. Read more about the award.
