A Hart House Memory
Hart House Farm pre-1970
"It was on a cold, late fall weekend in 1949 that I arrived (with Andy Ottelenghi on the back of my old motorcycle) at Caledon Hills Farm. Andy was an Engineering Physics classmate from Quito, Equador and I wanted him to see a little of Canada. We got to look around the old farm and painted some bedrooms."
--Earl Scott

In 1949, the same year as this reminiscence, the farm was purchased for the University by Warden Ignatieff and has since been called Hart House Farm. The tradition of bringing international students to experience rural Canada lives on to this day. Last fall, the International Education Centre at University of Toronto Mississauaga brought students to the farm to take in the fall colours while enjoying hiking, apple pressing, a BBQ, and a music jam session.
With its almost century-long history, Hart House has inspired special memories for generations of students, staff, faculty and others. If you have a special memory that you would like to share with Quarterly readers, contact Andrea Blackler at andrea.blackler@utoronto.ca.
A Word from the Warden
Students and visitors to Hart House over the past several months will have noted that all major public events at the House now begin with a very intentional acknowledgement that the land on which the University of Toronto, including Hart House, stands has been the sacred and traditional land of Indigenous peoples for some 15,000 years.
