Holiday Market

The holidays are almost upon us, and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) will hold its Holiday Market on Saturday, December 13, 2014, from 9 am to 4 pm in the Academic Building on the IAIA campus -- 83 Avan Nu Po Road, Santa Fe.  This annual event takes place on the same day as Santa Fe Community College's Holiday Market so patrons can take advantage of the proximity of the two campuses and get twice the holiday shopping done with a minimum of travel time.

The 2014 IAIA Holiday Market will feature works of art by over 40 artists including Courtney Leonard, Paul Moore, Glenda Loretto, and Kathleen Wall - plus creations by IAIA students and numerous other Native artists.

Native American artists still have time to become a vendor at the Market - applications can accessed by clicking here.  The fee for Native American artists and vendors not associated with IAIA is $75.  Contact Chee Brossy at 505.424.5704 or [email protected] for more information.  Admission is free and the market is open to the public.  Visit www.iaia.edu for directions to the campus.

Student Art Show - Morphing Nature: Site Specific Sculpture from Recovered Plant Materials:  November 14, 2014 through April 26, 2015 - Botanical Garden at Museum Hill

Students from the Institute of American Indian Arts and the Santa Fe University of Art and Design have created site-specific sculptures made from recovered plant materials cleared from the site of the Botanical Garden's next phase of construction.  Some works also include other found objects, both man-made and naturally occurring.

This exhibition is located in the Botanical Garden on Museum Hill (715 Camino Lejo), along the Garden's Art Trail, which is accessible for handicapped visitors.  The exhibition will be on display for five and a half months.  Morphing Nature is the first in a series of creative collaborations between the Santa Fe Botanical Garden and educational institution partners across Santa Fe and northern New Mexico.

Shown at left are two of the sculptures by IAIA students:  "Cookie" by Carolyn Taylor (Hopi), top;  "New Life" By Eldon Enjady III (Mescalero Apache), center.

The exhibition is free to IAIA and SFUAD students, faculty, and staff (with ID) during the day for the length of the exhibit.

Sculptures within the exhibition will be illuminated during the Garden's  GLOW event, which opened on December 4, 2014 and continues on selected evenings through January 3, 2015.  Admission to GLOW is $8 or $5 for members and free for children under 12. Live entertainment will be offered on Saturdays.  You can buy tickets through the Garden's website or at the door.

More Room for our History

Storage conditions for the permanent collections of the IAIA Archives were drastically improved by the installation of a small mobile compact shelving system on November 11, 2014. The Botwin Eye Group of Santa Fe donated the Spacesaver shelves, as they are moving towards a paperless office. Long-time IAIA employee, supporter, and current IAIA Foundation Board member Bob Harcourt (shown) contributed significant funds for the labor to move and install the system. The shelves increase our permanent storage capacity by 160 linear feet and now efficiently hold our photograph collections and the papers of Lloyd H. "Kiva" New and James Luna, among others.

IAIA Staff and Alumni News

Recently, Peter Kershaw, Adjunct Faculty, Film, arranged to lead a tour for a number of IAIA Cinematic Arts students to visit the Manhattan TV series sets.

To the left (top) is a photo of our students with Nani Rivera the Director of the Santa Fe Film Festival and Sam Tischler the Location Manager for Manhattan.

Richard Gablick, Area Coordinator, Student Housing, at IAIA for the last 3 years, had his film "Daughters of the Rhine", shown on SFCC-TV Channel 16 in Santa Fe.  Richard was also interviewed on KSFR in conjunction with the showing of the film.  His upcoming project, "Together" will be released in January 2015.

Eric Davis (at left) was recently added to the IAIA Staff as Marketing and Communications Director.  Before joining IAIA, Eric Worked at Hutton Broadcasting and the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company.  Prior to that, he was on-staff with Verizon and the Warner Music Group -- and while heading up his own marketing and events firm, executed programs with SFUAD and SMU, among other clients.

IAIA Alums (and sisters) Keri Ataumbi (Kiowa) and Teri Greeves (Kiowa) were named the 2015 co-recipients of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture Living Treasures Award.  They have both made great contributions to the Santa Fe arts community, and will be recognized in May, at the 2015 Native Treasures Arts Festival.
