and the IAIA school colors survey results are . . With multiple campus moves in Santa Fe, IAIA has donned several different school colors over the years. IAIA's Marketing and Communications Department asked the IAIA community to choose a set of colors in a community-wide survey to help strengthen IAIA's brand and image. During the process, the department discovered that what the IAIA community considered "traditional" or the "original" IAIA colors differed from person to person and decade to decade. Read story.

IAIA seeks public comments during higher education reaccreditation process
IAIA is seeking comments from the public about the college in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. The Institute will host a visit March 24-26, 2014, with a team representing the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. IAIA has been accredited by the Commission since 1984. The team will review the Institution's ongoing ability to meet the commission's criteria for accreditation.

CLE's Land Grant Office kicks off spring agriculture programs
IAIA's Center for Lifelong Education (CLE) Land Grant Office coordinates multiple programs and is pleased to announce upcoming agricultural projects for the 2014 spring semester. On-campus projects include the Community Garden Project, Research Project, and the extension's Student Experiential Learning Project.
Charlene Carr, new CLE Land Grant Office Manager, says the Community Garden Project is a great opportunity for IAIA students, staff and faculty to engage in cultural and agricultural practices, as well as health and wellness. The CLE offers free access to agricultural planting materials, garden/ greenhouse space, and educational workshops. Currently, the community garden has 12 members and the IAIA community is encouraged to participate. Participants are also engaged in group meetings, trainings, and research projects.
The garden project is coordinated by CLE's research students, Heidi Brandow and Travis Miller, who were hired under a USDA grant to gain research experience, and learn and observe culturally accepted scientific methods of small garden/greenhouse production by working with community garden participants. The students will present their findings at an upcoming conference.
At a recent community garden meeting, the gardeners discussed weather effects on greenhouse plants and suggested ideas for future educational workshops, including composting, canning & preserving foods, medicinal salves & oil preparations, beekeeping presentation, plants/flower planting for bees, prepping the landscape for attracting bees, native food diets and preparations.
Guido Lambelet, Bon Appetit cafeteria general manager, was invited to attend the meeting. He told the group which crops were needed and how much produce was needed for the cafeteria. Production and supply of products from the greenhouse could potentially reduce meal costs for IAIA students.
Weekly meetings of the community gardeners will be held every other Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 19.
In addition to working with the IAIA community, the Land Grant Office also works with the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) Agriscience group on greenhouse planting and other agricultural, health and wellness programs. In the future, students will visit IAIA or the CLE staff will travel to the high school students' tribal communities to provide programs.
In a recent visit, the SFIS Agriscience group aided in the Land Grant Office's project for the IAIA cafeteria in selecting and planting cool season seeds. The Land Grant Office will host SFIS throughout the spring semester and the IAIA community is encouraged to interact with the students.

In an effort to have a central place to view campus activities and cut down the number of emails, the Marketing and Communications Department will start distributing a weekly email, IAIA Campus Connections, on Monday mornings.
Campus Connections will have a listing of all campus activities for the week, including club food sales, museum receptions, meetings and workshops. A copy of the email will be posted in Blackboard. The email will also have a link to the IAIA Calendar, which is being overseen by the Facilities Department.
Campus Connections will start Feb. 17. Items for the weekly email will be due Fridays at 3 p.m. for distribution the following week. To submit an item or for questions, contact Kim Baca at 505.424.2351 or [email protected].

- The Fitness Center will offer free powwow dancing classes to men and women Feb. 9, 16 and 23 in the Hogan. The class for men will be taught by James Edwards from 1:30 - 3 p.m., and the class for women will be taught by Jhane Myers from 3:30 - 5 p.m.
- The center will also offer a West African Dance class at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Hogan.
- The Fitness Center has kicked off the Defeat Diabetes! contest, in which participants exercise for 150 minutes a week. Research from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) shows that people who exercise for 150 minutes a week have a lower risk of Type II diabetes than people who do not exercise. People who also exercise this length a week are able to control Type II diabetes better than non-exercisers. Prizes will be awarded at 4, 8 and 12 weeks to students, staff and faculty. Participants can start the contest any time. "All you have to do is stop by the Fitness Center, workout, then record your efforts to receive your prizes!" says Fitness and Wellness Department Director JoAnn Bishop.
- ExerPlay, outdoor fitness equipment sometimes called an adult playground (why should kids have all the fun?), is coming to IAIA soon. The Fitness and Wellness Department has purchased the equipment and will install it by the walking trail when the weather gets better. The trail will also be extended from the community garden to the sidewalk after ExerPlay is installed. An interesting feature of this trail will be Poetry Posts, installed along the path. The department will kick off a naming contest for the trail on Monday, Feb. 10. The winner will receive a $50 prize!

- Four IAIA alumni are reinventing how art and materials are presented. The work of Heidi Brandow, Brandee Caoba, Moira Garcia and Sonya Kelliher-Combs is currently showing at Santa Fe-based Zane Bennett Contemporary Art Gallery in an exhibition entitled Under 35: Part II. The show aims to cultivate an upcoming generation of art collectors as the artists reinvent tradition approaches to materials, composition, construction and concepts. Under 35: Part II ends Feb. 15. Read a review in the Santa Fe New Mexican's weekly arts magazine, Pasa Tiempo.
- In an effort to promote newsletter readership and build IAIA's social media following, the Marketing and Communications (MarComm) Department will have a gift card give-away. The contest is open to any IAIA staff member, faculty or student. For this issue, the first four people who can tell the MarComm Department what the third article in the newsletter was, and what was posted on IAIA's Facebook page on Friday, Feb. 7 will receive a $10 Subway, Starbucks or iTunes gift card. To claim a prize, come by the MarComm office across from the Dean of Student's office in the CLE between noon and 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10.
