Cumberland's Youth Strategy
At Cumberland Council we believe young people are not only the future- they are our present as well. Our area is a young one, with 1 in 5 residents aged 12 - 25 years old. It is important that their voices are heard as we build an inclusive community for all.
To help achieve this Council is supporting the Cumberland Youth Collective (CYC), a network of young leaders aged 16-24 years old. This ambitious and talented group of young men and women includes
ambassadors, analysts, storytellers, film makers, photographers and social media managers.
Throughout February Council and the Cumberland Youth Collective held extensive community consultations. The conversations took place wherever young people gathered, including schools, sports groups and community groups; but also in their digital hangouts, on Facebook and online.
This invaluable feedback will
inform the development of Cumberland Council's
4-year Youth Strategy. It is another way we are ensuring that our priorities are your priorities.

Cumberland Community Gets a Say
You are invited to have your say on a range of reforms currently on public exhibition, including proposed changes to the handling of charity collection bins; an overhaul of the community grants program; and the adoption of an interim complaints policy.
The reforms will tackle illegal dumping around charity collection bins on public land, invest $660,000 back into the community each year via a new grants program and provide Council staff and ratepayers with a clear and consistent approach to complaints handling.

New events strategy captures Cumberland's essence
Cumberland Council has adopted a new Events Strategy that will strengthen the local community and build a positive profile of Cumberland across Sydney. Based on feedback from 1,900 residents, the Strategy sets out a range of small and large events that brings to life the personality of our neighbourhoods, while enlivening our town centres and public spaces.
The strategy builds on a remarkably successful opening year of events. From July 2016 to February 2017, Cumberland Council delivered 30 events which engaged more than 100,000 residents and visitors to Cumberland breaking attendance records of the former Councils.

Free Asbestos Inspection and Collection
In a first for any local government, Cumberland Council is trialling free household asbestos inspections! The 45min visual inspection (sampling not included) will help residents understand where asbestos is, or is likely to be. Households built before 1990, in mostly original condition and within the Cumberland Council area are eligible to apply.
Cumberland Council also offers a collection and disposal service for small amounts of loose (already removed from the building) bonded asbestos sheets. If you live within the Cumberland Council area and the combined sheeting is not bigger than 10m2, you are eligible for the free pick-up service.

Help reduce landfill with free pick-up service
Do you have household items, furniture, hardware or electronic appliances that you no longer need or want? If your items are in good condition and you would like them to be reused, repaired and recycled, contact the Bower's Collection & Rehoming Service.
The Bower is an environmental charity committed to reducing waste going to landfill. It runs a free collection service in 21 council areas -including Cumberland - and has two shopfronts in Parramatta and Marrickville.

The world on your plate with 'Flavours of Auburn'
Switch off the TV food documentaries and star in your own food safari with one of the 'Flavours of Auburn' cooking classes. Community chefs will act as your guide as you learn how to prepare dishes from Ethiopia, Iran, Southern China, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Cumberland shines after Clean Up Australia Day
On Sunday 6 March the Cumberland community came out in force to remove rubbish from roadsides, parks and local waterways as part of Clean Up Australia Day. A record 24 sites were registered across the Cumberland Council area, with volunteers from local community groups, Scouts and Girl Guides groups, sporting groups and numerous members of the public taking part.
Approximately 250 bags of rubbish were collected, along with numerous car parts including doors, bonnets, engine parts and tyres. Adding to the haul were pieces of building materials. The most common items picked up as part of the Clean Up were cigarette butts and plastic items, in particular bottles and packaging. A big thank you to all involved!
