March 8th, 2017
From Mrs. Rowley

Congratulations to 8
th grade student, Thomas Nguyen, for earning a place in the National Geographic State Bee, to be held on March 31. Thomas was the winner of our in-house bee and qualified to take the online test. The winner of state will then represent Virginia at the National Bee. Good luck, Thomas. We are proud of you!

We have many talented students here at St. Ambrose, and we also congratulate the winners of the St. Ambrose Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest, Jillian Gomes, Mai-Lien Cao, Sophia Savage and Veronica Thieman, and the winner of the 2017 Knights of Columbus St. Ambrose School 8th Grade Class Pro-Life Emblem Contest, Andrew Dao. These students will receive their prizes at the parish Lenten Soup Supper on March 17.

This week our 8 th grade students attended the annual Mass for Vocations with other 8 th graders from diocesan schools. The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Burbidge. On Friday they will attend a hands-on workshop on financial management at Finance Park. This is a wonderful opportunity offered to local schools that enhances economic skills. We are grateful to all the parent volunteers whose assistance makes these trips possible.
Message from the PTO

Third quarter?!  How did that happen?  Your St. Ambrose PTO has accomplished quite a bit for being a brand new group.  We had the Wine and Chocolate tasting fundraiser last month which was enjoyed by all who attended, sampled and even won a prize or two.  The Three Kings Shop in December allowed our students to shop for their loved ones, made for some clearer households and raised money for our school.

Coming up we have our biggest fundraiser of the year (with the emphasis on FUN) - our Gala, "A Knight around the World" on Saturday, April 1st.  There are some tickets as well as 50/50 raffle tickets still available.  The online auction is just around the corner.  Even if you can't make it to the event we need 100% participation from you, the parents.

Our STEM club has grown by leaps and bounds this year (and has even morphed into a two-day club divided by ages for a better experience for all).  You can see some of their adventures in photos here in the BUZZ.

We have had service opportunities like our coat drive, collecting infant basket items, and making sandwiches for Martha's Table to name just a few.

I'm sure you heard about our Touch the Sea assembly where students learned all about (and even had a chance to touch) some undersea creatures.

Another save the date item is our Annual 5K race on Saturday, April 29th.  Details to follow.

Our school is a wonderful educational venue for our children, but not only do they learn in the classroom, but also by watching our example.  So helping with each class's basket for the Gala auction, offering time and talent as well as snacks for our terrific teachers and staff, serving as chaperones on field trips, sponsoring a table at the Gala, offering our services to help with all the different events and assemblies we provide is a perfect opportunity.

So, on behalf of the entire PTO, I thank you for your efforts to this point and look forward to meeting more of you in the near term as we work to bring this year to a close with many more volunteer and service opportunities.

Sincerely,

Sarah Moran
President, St. Ambrose PTO

Knight Spotted at Saint Ambrose!

Valiant knight, "Sir Cooper" made an appearance at afternoon pick up (to boost ticket sales for the Knight Around the World Gala). Fortunately, there were no dragons to be found in the school and Mrs.Rowley appreciated his heroic protection!

First Aid: Teeth Injuries

If your child prematurely loses a baby tooth, there's no need to try to replace it. But if a permanent tooth is dislodged, it's a dental emergency. Permanent teeth have the best chance of survival if replaced within 15 minutes. So it is important to act quickly and follow the guidelines below.

Many other dental injuries are less urgent, but may need to be looked at by a dentist. Most dental injuries in preschool and school-age children occur from falls, while dental injuries in teens are often sports related.

The St. Ambrose  Food Collection for the St. Lucy Project Begins Next Week!

The St. Lucy Project is a food pantry and delivery program of The Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington that is striving to achieve a Diocese without hunger, one county, one neighborhood, one parish, one family at a time.  You are the "bedrock" foundation of the Catholic response to hunger in our Diocese.   Christ House is included in the St Lucy Project Network.

During next week, March 13-17, we will be collecting canned meat/fish, pasta sauce (no glass please), canned vegetables, children's snacks, peanut butter & jelly, soup,  cereals (hot and cold), dried and canned beans, canned fruit, juice, rice and pasta.  Please consider sending any of these items in with your child to help feed those less fortunate.  This is a St. Ambrose community-wide service project.  If you have any questions or comments please email the PTO - At-Large Service Member Clare Stalnaker at   [email protected] .  Thank you in advance for your help!

Club Updates

Last week our Wednesday STEM Club performed structural testing of their bridges! If you recall, we had a design load of 5 lbs, and were also testing to max failure load. We restrained the two ends of our bridges and applied our load at the bridge midspan.

The STEM club proved to be great structural engineers! All the bridges met the loading criteria. Two bridges even surpassed the 10lb load, so we will bring more weight this week and continue testing these bridges to failure. Great work!

Our K-1 st STEM Club on Thursday celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday with a Cat in the Hat engineering challenge. We all remember what a mess Thing 1 and Thing 2 made, but the Cat came back to clean up the mess with his cleaning machine. Unfortunately on Thursday, the cleaning machine was broken, so they Kindergarten and 1 st graders were tasked with designing and building their own cleaning machine Thingamajigger!

The students had a variety of materials available to build: balsa wood, cardboard, craft sticks, index cards, bottle caps, pipe cleaners, straws, cups and tape. The kids were very engaged and I particularly enjoyed their explanations of how their machines worked!
