From the Minister
I'd like to recommend a couple books. First, this year's UUA Common Read: Rev. Dr. William Barber, The Third Reconstruction. (For the Common Read info: CLICK HERE). I'll be preaching about this on Mar 26, and we'll have an Adult RE discussion of the ideas on Thu Apr 20, 7:30.
I saw William Barber speak at General Assembly. To get a sample, take a look at this 3-minute clip on youtube: CLICK HERE.
Barber's book, growing out his experience starting in summer 2013 rallying people across North Carolina in protest of voting restrictions, describes a new justice movement. As "Moral Mondays" protests spread to several other states, Barber sees the evidence of a Third Reconstruction -- after the First, in the years after Emancipation, and the Second, in the civil rights era. It's an important book, and I look forward to talking about it with you on Sun Mar 26 and Thu Apr 20.
The second book I'd like to ask you to get and read is Michael Eric Dyson, Tears We Cannot Stop. The NYTimes Book Review said: "One of the most frank and searing discussions on race ... a deeply serious, urgent book, which should take its place in the tradition of Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and King's Why We Can't Wait." Our Anti-Racism Social Justice Team has scheduled a discussion about this important book for after the service on Sun May 20.
Last April we took a stand as a congregation to say that black lives matter -- which was necessary to say because in so many ways black lives are treated as not mattering. I behooves us to continue learning more about both the realities of injustice and the possibilities for justice.
Yours in the faith we share, Meredith |

Sign Up & Be Counted
This Sun Mar 12, the CUUC Social Justice Teams invite you to visit the activity tables after worship and add your name to three petitions on current issues before government. The CUUC Women's Issues Social Justice Team asks you to sign a petition to the New York State Senate urging them to vote in favor of the NY State Comprehensive Contraceptive Coverage Act. The NY State Assembly has twice passed this bill, but the Senate to date has not passed it. Read the CCCA petition here.
|
|
The CUUC Racial Justice Team invites you to sign a petition to support Raise the Age NY. New York and North Carolina are currently the only two states that prosecute 16 and 17 year olds as adults. This bill would raise the age of adult criminal responsibility from 16 to 18 so that youth who are charged with a crime may be treated in a more age-appropriate manner. Read the Raise the Age petition here.
The CUUC Racial Justice Team is also asking your support for the proposed New York State Dream Act. This bill would create a DREAM fund and commission to help provide scholarships to college-bound children of immigrants. The bill also eliminates obstacles to obtaining State financial aid and expands the opportunities for undocumented students to attend higher education institutions in NY. In addition, it allows immigrant families the ability to open a NY State 529 family tuition account. Read the NYC Dream Act petition here.

Special Musical Guest

Clarifying the Future Vision of CUUC
On Sat Mar 18,
we will be hosting Visioning Sessions that we hope all Members and Friends will attend. The Visioning Sessions are designed to help our congregation clarify and articulate its 10-year vision as a statement, and create a starter list of goals that can later be incorporated into a long-range plan. It is a highly participatory process, designed to involve as many Members and Friends of the congregation as possible in small group sessions.
During either a morning or afternoon session on Sat Mar 18, you will be invited to take part in a workshop that will address the most basic questions about our shared sense of purpose: What are we individually called to do? Where do we want to go together? What vision of the future do we have for the congregation? How can we get there? A member of our congregation recently described the goal of the visioning process to me in a perfectly succinct way: "How good do we want this place to be?" Food will be provided at each of the sessions.
You can sign up for a Visioning Session online at
cucwp.org/searchforthefuture and there will be signup sheets after worship for the next several Sundays. Childcare will be provided (please indicate if you will need childcare when you sign up). If you have further questions, please contact Creighton Cray ( [email protected], 914-830-0987).

Plate Share for March
Westchester Coalition for Police Reform
In the month of March, we share half the non-pledge Sunday collection with the Westchester Coalition for Police Reform. The WCPR was started by organizations and individuals in the White Plains area after the death of Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr. at the hands of the White Plains police. WCPR holds monthly meetings that are open to the public, and hosts regular events that explore the issues around police oversight and accountability. WCPR has started meetings with local governments regarding the development of civilian oversight boards. In April, the WCPR will be convening a conference involving leaders and experts on police-civilian review boards from around the state, at Pace University Law School. WCPR.org

Your Moment of Zen
The touch my lover brings, breeze in the pines, That email to answer, moon rising over a winter lake, A bowl of oatmeal, the prick of a pin, The fluttering fall of a red maple leaf, My friend's sweater, a moment's fear, The raising and lowering of the teacher's eyebrows, Flowers among the grass, playground sounds, And the riverbank talks of the waters of March -- Everywhere, oneness never stops reducing.
