March Madness is already happening in the waterfowl world. Many species are coming back through on their way north and more intense displays are occurring. Watch the divers like hooded mergansers and goldeneyes, as well as dabblers like green-winged teal for great displays.

Bird of the Day

Northern Shoveler −
Anas clypeata

I often see northern shovelers in masse swirling around in the ponds. I have always assumed that they do this to stir up the water and bring food up to surface like a phalarope. However, this morning they were also up-ending and spinning, very comical to watch. Northern shovelers have special structures in their bill to help them sieve food out of the water. They are the baleen whales of the duck world.
