'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' at Boston Opera House Through March 19th

An adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" is being performed at the Boston Opera House through March 19th.

The play is about 15-year-old Christopher, who "is exceptionally intelligent but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life." He is suspected of killing his neighbor's dog and decides to find the real killer. What he learns through his search is earth-shattering!

The Boston Athenaeum (10 1/2 Beacon St.) is hosting several events that are open to members and nonmembers.

"Fallen Glory: The Lives and Deaths of History's Greatest Buildings" is on Wednesday, March 15th from noon to 1 pm. This is a book talk with James Crawford on lost and ruined buildings from the beginning of civilization to modern times. This event is free to members and nonmembers.

"Three Duos and a Trio" is on Sunday, March 19th from 1 to 2 pm. This is a live performance by Capital Trio featuring works for the cello, piano and violin. This event is $15 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Click here to register.

"The True Flag: Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the Birth of the American Empire" is on Tuesday, March 21st from noon to 1 pm. Foreign correspondent Stephen Kinzer will talk about American imperialism at the beginning of the 20th century. This event is free to members and nonmembers.
'Trumbo ' and 'Equity'  at 
Emerson's  Bright Lights Series;
Screenings Feature Post-Film Talks

Emerson College's Bright Light Series continues with "Trumbo" on Tuesday, March 14th. Dalton Trumbo was Hollywood's top screenwriter in 1947 until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. The screening will be preceded by "1954" by Tom Kingdom, which is about the effects of the anti-communist witch-hunt that occurred in the 1950s and how it impacted a child and his family. A discussion with VMA faculty member Tom Kingdom will follow the screening. 

"Equity" will be screened on Thursday, March 16th. Naomi Bishop is an investment banker who is "determined to overcome a previous stain to her professional reputation, which is a challenge in the male-dominated financial sector she works in." "Equity" is a part of the MIT Women Take the Reel Series. A discussion with producer and actor David Alan Basche (Emerson '90) will follow the screening. 

Post-film discussions with special guest filmmakers, faculty and alumni will follow all screenings.  All screenings are free and open to the public and begin at 7 pm. Screenings take place in the Bright Family Screening Room (Paramount Center, 559 Washington St.). Seating is first-come, first-served. Tickets will be available, one per person, starting at 5 pm at the Paramount Center box office on the day of the show. Click here for more info about the Bright Light Series.  
'Facing Expulsion: Pioneering Activists Harry H. Dow and Tien Fu Wu' at Paramount Center March 17th & 18th

ArtsEmerson is presenting "Facing Expulsion: Pioneering Activitists Harry H. Dow and Tien Fu Wu" at the Paramount Center on March 17th and 18th. 

The performance includes a short film, a one-woman play, another short play and a panel discussion with the performers.

The Chinese Historical Society of New England (CHSNE) will stage a performance of "Nutzacrackin' Immigration and Naturalization" depicting a fictional immigration interrogation during the time of the Chinese Exclusion Act. The original script was written by 
Harry H. Dow (1904-1985), a Suffolk Law School graduate, who in 1929 was the first Chinese-American to pass the Massachusetts Bar exam.

Christina R. Chan will also present a selection from her one-woman play, "Unbinding Our Lives," on the lived experience of Tien Fu Wu (1887-1975), a Chinese woman living in San Francisco at the turn of 20th century.

There will be two performances of the show: Friday, March 17th at 7:30 pm and Saturday, March 18th at 2 pm. Click here to purchase tickets.
 
The Boston Flower & Garden Show Preview Party in Partnership with 
The Genesis Foundation for Children

The Boston Flower & Garden Show Preview Party is Tuesday, March 21st in partnership with The Genesis Foundation for Children (60 Temple Place).
The evening will include an exclusive first look at the beautiful garden displays and exhibits at the show. There will be hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine and live musical entertainment provided by Mix 104.1.

Speak Out! The 3rd Annual Fifth of March of Orations at Old South Meeting House March 22nd

From 1772 to 1775 rousing speeches were given at the Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) to commemorate the Boston Massacre. Come hear excerpts from some of the speeches at Speak Out! The 3rd Annual Fifth of March of Orations at the Meeting House on Wednesday, March 22nd

Hear speeches given by John Hancock, Dr. Benjamin Church and Dr. Joseph Warren, performed by an inter-generational group of students, actors and historians. The speeches will be given in the grand hall -- the same place where the orations took place nearly 250 years ago.

This program is co-sponsored by Suffolk University's History Department and The Bostonian Society. This program is made possible with funding from the Lowell Institute. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested by clicking here. This event is at 6 pm
 
Interactive Digital Art Installation by Camille Utterback at 
Emerson College's Urban Arts Gallery

A new interactive digital art installation, Entangled, which tracks viewers' movements to create abstract and evolving painting-like projections on a screen, is at the Emerson Urban Arts: Media Art Gallery (25 Avery St.).  

Entangled is a creation by international artist Camille Utterback. The art will be displayed on a 10x15 foot screen. The installation will run concurrently with Cybernetic Serendipity, an exhibition documenting what many consider to be the first digital media art exhibition, curated by Jasia Reichardt at the ICA in London in 1968.

Entrance to the gallery is free and is open Wednesday through Saturday 2 to 7 pm. The exhibit will be up through April 22nd.

The  Downtown Boston BID Ambassadors provide clean and hospitality services seven days a week, nearly 24 hours a day. Ambassadors create a friendly, welcoming Downtown presence by helping visitors with directions, notifying fire and police personnel of incidents and more.

B/SPOKE Studios Hosts  Fundraisers for Nonprofits, Charities and More  

If you enjoy cycling you will probably enjoy it even more at one of the many charitable fundraising cycling classes at B/SPOKE Studios (101 Federal St.). You'll get exercise and help out a worthy cause!  

"We love using our studio and community to help raise funds and awareness for charities of all sorts," said Grace Goodearl, director of client experience. "It's a way for us to give back in a positive way. It also gives us an opportunity to meet new riders, some who have never spun before, and bring people together under a united cause." 

B/SPOKE doesn't donate to the individual charities, but does charge a heavily discounted rate to rent the studio.

The Downtown Boston Residents' Association will meet tonight (Monday, March 13th) at Suffolk University's Modern Theatre.

The agenda includes: BID President & CEO Rosemarie Sansone, who will provide an update on the BID's work; An update on the Dunkin' Donuts opening at West and Tremont streets; The owners of the Beehive (South End) and Beat Brasserie (Harvard Square) restaurants will be presenting their proposal for a new food, beverage and social concept on the ground floor of the Lafayette City Center (Washington Street and Avenue de Lafayette); and a presentation on George Howell Coffee applying for a wine and malt license. This meeting is open to the public and will start at 7 pm

Arts & Crafts Market 2017

The Downtown Boston BID is expanding the Downtown Boston Arts & Crafts Market program for 2017, and is seeking vendors to sell their products. The market will be at Readers Park by the Irish Famine Memorial at the corner of Washington and School streets. The market will operate on Wednesdays and Fridays from May 17th through September 29th. 

All artwork, crafts and food offerings must be original and handmade by you or your studio or enterprise. No mass-produced goods are allowed.

The Downtown Boston Arts & Crafts Market accepts arts and crafts in the following categories: fiber arts, fine art (painting, photography, sculpture), Christmas ornaments and holiday items, Judaica, blown glass, stained glass, clay/ceramics, metal, wood furniture, clothing and accessories, children's clothing and toys, pet items, jewelry, artisan foods, personal products (soap and fragrances), home decor and more.

The Merchant (60 Franklin St.) is hosting the Taste of Iceland for four nights, with a special menu from March 17th through March 20th.


Along with its regular menu, The Merchant is offering a 4-course special menu using authentic Icelandic ingredients imported specifically for the menu. The Genesis Foundation for Children (60 Temple Place) has teamed up with Broadway in Boston so that a percentage of ticket sales for the upcoming show "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" will be donated to the non-profit. 
The Tony Award-winning show is being performed at the  Boston Opera House  through March 19th. Click  here to purchase tickets and use the code: Genesis , and $20 of each ticket will go to The Genesis Foundation .
