A NOTE FROM THE PASTORS

I've recently been reading and enjoying "Setting the Table" by Danny Meyer, a New York City entrepreneur of restaurants like Union Square Café, Gramercy Tavern, and Shake Shack. In the opening pages of the book he traces much of his success back to the power of hospitality, when he writes, "What really challenges me to get up and go to work every day, and has also motivated me to write this book, is my deep conviction about the intense human drive to provide and receive hospitality - well beyond the world of restaurants. Within moments of being born, most babies find themselves receiving the first four gifts of life: eye contact, a smile, a hug, and some food. We receive many other gifts in a lifetime, but few can ever surpass those first four. That first time may be the purest hospitality transaction we'll ever have, and it's not much of a surprise that we'll crave those gifts for the rest of our lives. I know I do."

The significance of Meyer's insight around these simple but specific hospitality gestures of eye contact, a smile, a hug, and some food cannot be underestimated and the good news is we are perfectly set up as a church to offer all four gifts each and every week that we gather across our three sites for worship. Whether you're scheduled to serve in one of our many ministry areas this Sunday or just plan to be attendance, would you join us in our collective effort to offer radical hospitality here in the heart of Raleigh so that many might experience a deep sense of connection not only to us but also to God.
