2017 Conferences and Events
Workers Memorial Day/Annual Day of Mourning for Miners
If you attended our Inaugural Day of Mourning for Miners
last year, you know it is a can't-miss event. Please join us in our second annual event in observance of Workers Memorial Day. A special memorial service consisting of candle lighting and a moment of silence will pay tribute to miners who have been injured, suffered illness or died on the job due to workplace-related hazards and incidents in the mining industry. The honor bell will sound an echo of remembrance along with a call out of our fallen metal/non-metal and coal miners.
In addition to remembering those we've lost, this event will serve as a reminder that it is everyone's role to raise public awareness of workplace health and safety to prevent further workplace injuries and deaths in the mining industry.
Prior to the ceremony we will be serving a free breakfast with a tour of the Florida Public Safety Institute following the ceremony for planning and development of the Surface Mine Rescue Contest coming February 2018.

BASF Global Safety Stand-Down
On
April 5, 2017 the Florida Mine Safety Program will be participating in a Global Safety Stand-down to coincide with our annual MSHA refresher. The event will be held at the Florida Public Safety Institute Conference Center in Havana, Florida. The current focus is on integrating life-saving rules and housekeeping components into the annual elements of the MSHA training. There will also be a focus on first aid, CPR and AED training.
This event will take place as part of the Global Safety Days by BASF. The theme for his year is "Safety is about you, me and us as a team" with emphasis on housekeeping discipline

As the Florida Public Safety Institute (FPSI) and Florida Mine Safety Program move forward with improving and enhancing our services to the mining operations and wonderful folks that work in and around the mines, we are establishing an advisory board to assist FPSI in making our dreams for the program a reality.
The mission of the advisory board is to assist FPSI in identifying industry best practices, creating a statewide training plan, drafting rule language for the Surface Mine Rescue Contest coming in February 2018, programming for fallen miners yearly and planning a statewide mining conference.

The Florida Mine Safety Program (FMSP) aims to educate those who partake in mining operations by assisting mining companies and mining contractors with their health and safety training. For the past 31 years, the program has operated as a federally-funded grant program under the the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), whose mission is to prevent death, disease and injuries in the mining industry. This is done through a variety of training courses, conferences and informational seminars offered by FMSP. These courses highlight proper emergency evacuation plans, health and safety standards and more. FMSP diligently works to ensure that miners working in both Florida metal and nonmetal operations are aware of the health and safety standards and are effectively trained to take precautionary measures. Through a collaborative effort, FMSP and MSHA Educational Field and Small Mine Services (EFSMS) work together to reduce the frequency and severity of mining accidents and ensure a safe environment for all.
