We have chosen Kelly green this year in honor of St. Patrick's Day! If you are interested in
purchasing a t-shirt, please click the link below by Friday, March 10th at 3pm with the quantity and sizes (child, adult men or adult ladies cut) of t-shirts you would like. The shirts will be available for pick up on Friday, March 17th at the Smart Start Office or you may pick them up on-site Saturday, March 18th at the Teddy Bear Breakfast.
Below are the prices of the t-shirts in correspondence to the size. Payment will be collected when you pick up your t-shirts. If you have any questions, feel free to email Cassie Harris (

). It is important to note that we will not be selling t-shirts on site the day of the breakfast this year.

Gov. Cooper Offers Budget with Common Ground Solutions for NC
|
Here are Governor Cooper's budget h
ighlights of Investments in Early Learning:
- Expands funding and eliminates the waitlist for NC Pre-K so that by July 1, 2018 an estimated additional 4,668 at-risk four-year olds will receive high quality pre-kindergarten classes.
- Invests $15 million in Smart Start to provide support and flexibility to all 100 counties to improve early childhood educational outcomes and better prepare children for school.
- Funds an additional 2,000 slots for children from low-income working families to receive subsidized, high quality child care services and increases the Child Care Subsidy market rate by 25% of the most recent market rate survey in selected counties.
- Restoration of the NC Child and Dependent Care tax credit provides tax relief to middle class families. Cooper recommends enacting a child and dependent care credit for families with eligible care expenses for children and other dependents. This credit, effective beginning in tax year 2018, would save taxpayers an estimated $52.5 million in FY 2018-19.

New Online Tool Helps Locate Your Local Park!
|
The Trust for Public Land works to protect the places people care about and to create close-to-home parks-particularly in and near cities, where 80 percent of Americans live. Their goal is to ensure that every child has easy access to a safe place to play in nature. They also conserve working farms, ranches, and forests; lands of historical and cultural importance; rivers, streams, coasts, and watersheds; and other special places where people can experience nature close at hand.
The Trust for Public Land announced ParkServe™, a new, interactive platform that tracks urban park access nationwide. This platform will help local leaders evaluate urban park systems and identify places where new parks are needed most urgently.
During its initial launch,
ParkServe™ evaluated Charlotte, NC along with 5,045 other cities that cover approximately 45% of the U.S. population.
When completed in 2018,
ParkServe™
will include data from 13,931 cities and towns, covering more than 80% of the U.S. population. The web-based tool will let people locate the park nearest to them, determine the percentage of residents who live within a 10-minute walk of a local park, and identify the neighborhoods most in need of new parks.

Healthy Futures Starting in the Kitchen - Grow It, Try It, Like It! Workshop

Grow it, Try it, Like it! A Nutrition Education Kit featuring MyPlate is a garden themed nutrition education kit for child care center staff that introduces children to fruits and vegetables. The kit includes seven booklets featuring fruits and vegetables with fun activities through the imaginary garden at Tasty Acres Farm! Use the kit to promote learning fun activities and recipes that give tips for cooking with children.
The 1st 15 Childcare Centers that register for this class, will receive a FREE Grow It, Try It, Like It! kit (1 per center).
