Student Power Actualized through Respect and Kinship - a SPARK was lit at BHS
The special SPARK assembly for Berkeley High freshmen was held last week as part of the on-going work to build a positive school culture at Berkeley High.
Among other probing questions and discussions, students were asked, "What do you believe in that is bigger than yourself?"
Message from Superintendent Evans
We've been working on many fronts to ensure student safety and create a sense of well-being at school for all of our students. For example, in the last several months, we:
  • Installed new/refurbished security cameras and/or public address systems at eight schools to improve school security.
  • Directed actions in the Local Control & Accountability Plan (LCAP) to increase reliance on restorative justice practices in support of positive school discipline and the reduction of suspensions.
  • Expanded sexual harassment awareness and prevention through staff trainings, classroom lessons, and school assemblies, and improved sexual and gender-based harassment reporting procedures.
In our continued effort to stay closely connected with all families, we will soon be offering families the opportunity to opt-in to receiving text messages for important school communications.

K-8 Parent Teacher Conferences:
First Week of November
Parent-Teacher Conferences are a great way to collaborate with your child's teacher and strengthen the home-school partnership. We encourage every parent to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher during Parent-Teacher Conference days. If you have not done so already, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible to make an appointment. Here you can find some helpful tips on preparing for your parent-teacher conference.
Willard Math Night Leaves Everyone Counting
Willard Middle School has developed a reputation as a school that creatively explores math through video production, games, and other imaginative methods. This year's Annual Math Night at Willard was an opportunity for parents and students to explore math through creativity together. Following a delicious dinner prepared by Willard's Growing Leaders class, parents and students rotated through seven mathematical investigations, looking at probability, dimension, games, geometry, whodunnit's, Willard math history, and design. School Board Members Hold "Office Hours"
Berkeley School Board members do not have offices at the District, so they've created "Office Hours" in an effort to make themselves available to the community in an informal setting. Each board member has set aside time to meet with parents, staff and community members at local coffee shops, and they encourage you to drop in to share your questions, concerns and ideas.

The times and locations of board member office hours are listed here.
Berkeley High College & Career Center in High Gear
Angela Price
Angela Price has made a difference in the lives of many students during her eight years as College Advisor. This year she's a recipient of Yale Educator of the Year Award. Congratulations, and thank you for your service, Ms. Price!
Whether advising students on college options, hosting college admissions visits from across the nation, or running financial aid and other useful workshops, Berkeley High's College & Career Center is always a hub of activity on campus. It's especially busy in the "CCC" this time of year, with seniors deep in the post-secondary planning process and seeking advice on any number of questions about college, careers and other post-high school learning opportunities.

Our students benefit from the expertise of two full-time college advisors funded by school site funds from the Berkeley School Excellence Program (BSEP),  Berkeley's local tax.
BSEP Budget Workshop - October 22
The current BSEP Measure, which provides nearly $25 million annually to our schools, is up for renewal in November 2016.

The special tax known as BSEP has made a significant difference in the quality of our schools since 1986, providing class size reduction, libraries, music, and much more.

To learn more about BSEP, and engage with other community members in discussing the next measure, please come to a first BSEP Budget Workshop on October 22. The next workshop is tentatively scheduled for February 25.

The Annual School Governance/Site Council Orientation Workshop will take place before the BSEP workshop (5:30 to 6:10 pm).

Find event details, including the online registration link, on the new BSEP Blog.
