Roxbury Schools Support Roxbury Police with a Day of Blue
Roxbury Township Schools collected donations over the past week to help the Roxbury Police Department reach its goal of sending 17 members of its force to ride in this year's Police Unity Tour from Flemington, NJ to Washington, D.C. on May 12th as a remembrance of retired Roxbury Police Lieutenant Joe Franklin.  The Unity Tour Team as of this morning was just shy of $3,100 from meeting its goal according to their page .

This whole movement got started after a Tap Into Roxbury article on February 22nd where a Roxbury cop made a reluctant plea for bike tour sponsors. Roxbury Police Patrolman Silvio Valdes made this request at a Roxbury Chamber of Commerce meeting where he explained that it would cost $1,850 per rider and that the team would need to raise $31,450 to send all 17 riders on this tour.

Six of the seven schools agreed to collect donations and all would wear blue on Friday, March 3rd. Roxbury officers dressed either uniform or their unity tour attire visited each of the schools to see the outpouring of support that families in this community have for those who serve and protect it and to personally collect the student donations.

Unfortunately, due to the cold temperatures, the sea of blue was hard to see but was there in spirit with cheers and clapping by the students and staff with some schools even chanting ROXBURY and giving the officers high fives!

Roxbury Hears Big Plans for Fixing Route 80/Howard Blvd Interchange
Substantial improvements are being proposed for the Howard Boulevard/Route 80 interchange, a project estimated to cost about $24 million.

The improvements would include construction of a new, larger Route 80 bridge over Howard Boulevard. This would enable widening the boulevard below into five lanes, with one being a center left-turn lane for northbound drivers aiming to go west on the interstate.

Additionally, there would be major upgrades to the Route 80 westbound off-ramp to Howard Boulevard, to the Route 80 eastbound ramp from southbound Howard Boulevard and to the Howard Boulevard-to-Route 80 eastbound ramp just north of the New Jersey Transit station.

Accents on Dance Upcoming Programs

Hip Hop Dance After School

Hip Hop is an eclectic street style of dance that is performed in running shoes to current upbeat tempos. The dynamic moves taught in Hip Hop class are fast, stylish, funky and similar to those seen in music videos.

This class is appropriate for high energy dancers that are driven by a beat. Similar to a Jazz class, Hip Hop is broken down into 3 parts - warm up, corner work/technique and choreography. Students in a Hip Hop class will work on their strength, flexibility, and musicality through intricate fun and fast paced funky choreography.

Since the tempos are usually quicker than any other dance form, the choreography in a Hip Hop class provides a great cardio workout and is also a fun way to exercise the mind and memory.

(Children should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers to class)

Date:   Throughout the 2016/2017 School Year
Time: After-School at the Designated School
Location: Franklin and Jefferson Elementary Schools
Cost: $75 per child
