Tax Assessments
If you own property in Spruce Grove, you will be receiving your 2017
assessment notice
in the mail this month.
This assessment notice will show the market value of your property, which will be used to calculate the annual taxes on that property. This process, which follows guidelines established by the provincial government, helps ensure taxes are distributed in a fair and equitable way where owners of property with similar market values pay similar amounts of property taxes.
If you have questions about your 2017 assessment notice, you can attend the Assessment Open House on March 8 from 1-7 p.m. in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall. An assessor will be available to review and discuss your property assessment.

Booster Juice, an Alberta success story, continues to thrive

Dale Wishewan sits in his classic plaid suit, spinning a pen in his hand as he thinks in silence.
Sports memorabilia lines the wall of his office - a signed hockey stick and a few baseballs in plastic cases sit behind him in a bookcase.
If you didn't know him you'd probably think he was nervous. But for those who do, they know that's rarely the case for the 48-year-old.
"I don't get nervous much," he finally says. "But I think that comes from my background as a mechanical engineer. I like to be methodical. I try to be very analytical.
"People see me as a risk taker, and I do take risks, but I like to think of them as being educated risks."
He's also a big believer in intuition and backing yourself. After all, he didn't have a background in food services before launching what is now Canada's largest juice bar franchise....

City administration were very helpful in providing the timelines and how properties were assessed. We will keep our business community informed of the timelines for reviewing and appealing your property tax assessment, should you feel the assessment has been either understated or overstated. AT SIWIN FOODS' FOUR-year-old, $20-million food processing plant in southeast Edmonton, vice-president Gord DeJong points to the dumpling-making machines. One wraps the pork and vegetable mixture in thin dough. A series of conveyor belts carry the dumplings through the steam cooker, a water bath and the flash-freezer, eventually dropping them into 500-gram bags, which are boxed and prepared for shipment across the country.
"Alberta has seen by far the most Chinese investment of any province, with 108 deals and $60 billion in investment since 2004. B.C. comes second, with $14.5 billion."
The machines - with the help of the company's 65 employees - can pump out 20,000 pieces an hour, but it's not enough. Siwin supplies dumplings - along with potstickers, gyoza and sausages - to Sobeys, Safeway, Costco and T&T Supermarkets across the country, and business is booming. DeJong says the company plans to double the plant's 35,000-square-foot expanse in the next year or two. "When we opened this facility I thought we'd need another building in maybe 10 years," he says. "We need it now." ....

U.S. Steel not required for Keystone XL,
despite Trump pledge

The Keystone XL pipeline won't be required to use American-made steel to earn construction approval from the Trump administration, the White House said Friday, despite U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated claims.
The president's executive order mandating the use of U.S. steel is "specific to new pipelines or those that are being repaired," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters. "Since this one is already current, under construction, the steel is already literally sitting there, it would be hard to go back," she said.
That's welcome news to TransCanada Corp. as its moves forward with the US$8-billion project that would span 1,900 kilometres from Alberta through three states - Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska - before connecting to an existing network feeding crude to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries. The line would carry as much as 830,000 barrels of oil a day, including some from North Dakota's Bakken shale.
In 2012, Calgary-based TransCanada said it expected half of the 821,000 tons of steel needed to construct the pipeline to be produced inside of the United States. The remainder of the steel was expected to be imported from Canada, Italy, and India.
Exempting Keystone XL from the president's requirement to use American steel would seem to fly in the face of Trump's public comments. Trump has repeatedly boasted that he forced pipeline companies to agree to use U.S. steel in their projects.
During a Feb. 23 meeting with manufacturing CEOs at the White House, Trump told U.S. Steel Corp chief executive Mario Longhi that "the pipe is coming from the U.S." for the Keystone project, as well as Energy Transfer Partners LP's Dakota Access pipeline.
During a Feb. 16 press conference, the president said that in exchange for using "the powers of government to make that pipeline happen" the administration "want them to use American steel."
He repeated the claim a day later during a tour of a Boeing Co. plant in South Carolina.
"You probably saw the Keystone pipeline I approved recently, and the Dakota," Trump said. "And I'm getting ready to sign the bill. I said, where is the pipe made? And they told me not here. I said, that's good - add a little sentence that you have to buy American steel.....
