On Saturday, four teams from WMS shared the results of their long journey at the Odyssey of the Mind tournament. These teams have worked hard. With parent volunteers guiding them for the past few months, they spent Saturday sharing their interpretation of a problem presented by Delaware Odyssey of the Mind . This organization encourages children to work together, sharing their ideas, deciding how to best demonstrate those ideas so that others will understand them, and designing everything including their set and costumes and writing their script.

Students from WMS have participated in this program for more than six years. Each team has been led by parents who have spent countless hours coaching them. The coaches can teach a skill but they can't do these things for the children. It is an opportunity for children to learn how to determine what is needed and figure out a way to do it. It requires problem-solving, creativity and collaboration. It prompts learning by engaging students' interest in a topic or working toward a solution of a given problem.

This is an example of a program that began with a parent proposing this idea and has thrived and become one of the things our students look forward to each year. On Friday there is an assembly at 1:30 p.m. in the gym so the students can share their skits with the entire WMS community. If you happen to be free, you are invited to join us in the gym and enjoy the hard work of these parent-student teams. Congratulations to everyone who participated!

News & Notes News
An Arts-Filled Weekend for the WMS Community
by Assistant Head of School Laurie Orsic

This weekend, six 9-12 students had the opportunity to sing with the Delaware ACDA Children's Honor Choir.
It was a very busy and gratifying weekend for many WMS students (and their families). First on the schedule was a display of student art work sponsored by the Delaware Association of Independent Schools, in which the art work of WMS students and students from other schools was featured. Art teachers from several independent schools, along with WMS Art teacher Laurie Muhlbauer, helped hang the show at The Pilot School to spotlight the impressive imaginative work of so many young artists.

Next on the schedule was the Odyssey of the Mind competition on Saturday. WMS was represented by four teams - two K-2nd grade and two 3rd-5th grade teams. Each year for the past several years, WMS teams, as coached by volunteer parents, have competed in this program which develops and recognizes the values of creativity, innovation and ingenuity in its participants. The OoTM students had worked for weeks and their preparation was evident in each of their presentations.

And, finally, six WMS 9-12 students had the opportunity to sing with the Delaware ACDA Children's Honor Choir. What an amazing experience for all of the students - two days of in-depth rehearsal capped off by a chance to share five choral pieces composed and arranged especially for young voices. Area music teachers, including WMS' music teacher Heather Wadler, volunteered their time to make sure the two days of rehearsal and performance were successful for everyone.

In all three of these special events the takeaway was clear. The skills needed in the arts are the skills needed in life - commitment, a knack for invention and the discipline to strive and accomplish so much. In her powerful closing remarks, the ACDA guest conductor Andrea Ramsey, from the University of Colorado, reminded the audience, "Music gives us all our sense of humanity, connects us with others and shows us there is beauty in the world."

Dr. Ramsey shared her deep belief that "the arts are not an extra. They are not an additive. They are a preservative." This preservation of the spirit was in evidence in all of the WMS students involved in these three events. Congratulations to the WMS artists, singers and OoTM participants whose hard work represented WMS so well and thanks to their dedicated teachers and parents for supporting them in their efforts.

Emma Lewis (WMS '12) at Homecoming 2016
Featured Alumna: Emma Lewis, Class of 2012

Emma Lewis (WMS '12) takes every opportunity to come back to Wilmington Montessori School and reconnect with former classmates and teachers at the school that, she says, "helped influence [her] love of learning and independence."

She started her WMS journey when she was just 4 years old. After graduating in 2012, Emma went to Springer Middle School and is now attending Wilmington Friends for high school.

As we hear from so many of our alumni, one of Emma's favorite memories here was her sixth-grade class trip to New York City. During this annual trip, students participate in
the Global Citizenship Action Project (GCAP) and visit the United Nations. They attend presentations from several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to the U.N. and get a close-up view of others who have founded organizations to create positive change in the world . The sixth-graders then select an organization for which they will raise funds and awareness during the course of the school year.

"I found the GCAP trip to be very rewarding because it gave me time to bond with my class and also learn about a bunch of different charity projects," Emma said. "As a sixth-grader, it made me feel like I was making a difference."

Emma returns to WMS each summer to work at Camp Montessori, while also working at the DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC). In her spare time between school and work, Emma enjoys arts and crafts, animals and learning. She looks forward to returning to Camp Montessori each summer.

"Words cannot explain how much fun I have with the kids," Emma said. "Working with kids keeps you young, and it's always so much fun to watch them learn and experience things for the first time."
