VIPFranklin County Sheriff's Department Volunteer Impact Program Is Providing Opportunities for Individuals In Goodwill Programs

Individuals in Goodwill's Medicaid Waiver Discovery Services program in Franklin County are benefiting from a partnership with Franklin County Sheriff's Department. The Volunteer Impact Program (V.I.P.), which began in 2015, allows individuals with disabilities to volunteer at the Franklin County Sheriff's Department a few hours a day, two days a week.

Three individuals go regularly with their Goodwill Case Aid to the Sheriff's Department where they volunteer to do activities such as  vacuuming conference and training rooms, dusting offices, shredding documents, and even taking inventory in supply and evidence rooms. From time to time they also assist the Sheriff's Department's administrative staff putting information folders together for the various offices.

"A wonderful relationship had been created with the department, their deputies, and the individuals in our programs," states Maurice Hicks, Job Development Specialist. "They have been invited and attended the department's Christmas Luncheon and their annual award banquet. They have also been invited to sit in on training classes and demonstrations. V.I.P. has empowered the individuals and given them a sense of pride and accomplishment, in addition to being able to learn job skills and have community interaction."
