This year's National Nutrition Month focuses on moving toward food choices that improve health now and into the future. One style of eating that meets these criteria is the Mediterranean diet. It emphasizes consumption of vegetables, fruits, fish, whole grains, and legumes while encouraging healthy fats like olive oils and nuts.  Dairy, eggs and chicken are eaten in moderation while red meats and processed foods are eaten occasionally.

Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet
There is compelling evidence that following a Mediterranean diet may play a key role in reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, plus slow down the aging process.  The research compared the Mediterranean diet with a control group.  The results from several studies showed;
  • Significant declines in risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
  • Reductions in LDL cholesterol and metabolic syndrome.
  • Promise as an effective tool for weight loss over other types of diets.

Key components of the Mediterranean diet
The Mediterranean diet emphasizes:
  • Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts.
  • Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil.
  • Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods.
  • Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month.
  • Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week.
  • Drinking red wine in moderation (optional).
