Dear District 115 Families,

I continue to be proud of the wonderful student and staff accomplishments that have occurred thus far in the school year; in the classrooms, on stage, on the courts and fields, and within the wide array of clubs and activities occurring across all the schools. I appreciate the amazing parent and community support, and thank you for your partnership and involvement! With the spring season upon us, please take a look at the District 115 calendar and consider attending various theatre and musical performances, as well as the many athletic and extracurricular events occurring throughout the district. Also, please be reminded of the State of the District event (District 115 Vision Update) scheduled for April 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Yorkville Middle School.  The future success of our schools requires the continued dialogue and joint efforts of our schools, parents, and community.

Teaching and Learning Update

At the February 27 Board of Education meeting, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Nick Baughman provided a mid-year update on winter testing results of District 115 students. This information revolved around the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments that students took back in December. Shortly after returning from the winter break in January, each of the schools spent a great deal of time reviewing student growth and achievement information based upon the results between spring 2016 and winter 2017.

Our District 115 faculty and staff continue to work with their grade-level teams to adjust their lessons and how they approach classroom instruction. They also work with students both individually and in small groups to practice skill deficits, and provide students with various enrichment opportunities. Additionally, District 115 uses both mathematics interventionists and Teachers on Special Assignment (TOSAs) to work with classroom teachers to address the learning needs of our students at the various grade levels. Finally, in the area of reading, our reading specialists provide coaching to classroom teachers as a means to increase the skills of our elementary and middle school learners. The reading specialists co-teach with, and model lessons for, the classroom teachers. They also review student learning data, and offer new approaches to assist our students.

In the coming month, District 115 will propose a new English language arts (ELA) resource to the Board of Education. The new PreK-12 resource will support teachers, students, and parents in the 2017-18 school year as the District 115 ELA curriculum is learned by our students.

Please look for District 115 Summer School information that will be shared with our parents and community in the coming weeks. We are excited about our extensive summer offerings, and feel blessed to have the support of our District 115 Board of Education to provide extended learning across multiple programs and grade levels. Summer School information will be available on the District 115 website, and communicated to all families no later than March 24.

I wish all of our families a very safe and relaxing Spring Break!  We have a 1-hour release on Friday, March 24, and will be back in session on Monday, April 3.

Mr. Timothy M. Shimp

Kindergarten registration event for Yorkville Schools to be held March 7-8

Parents whose children will be starting kindergarten in the fall of 2017 in Yorkville CUSD 115 are invited to attend one of two upcoming parent information and registration evenings.

The District 115 Kindergarten Welcome and Registration Evenings will be held from 6-7 p.m. on March 7 and 8 at Yorkville High School, 797 Game Farm Road in Yorkville. Attendees should park in the lot in the rear of the high school and enter through Door 19.

Registration packets can be completed and submitted at the event, or taken home to be completed and then submitted to the child's specific school building.

Message from D115 Health Services: Flu Season

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are coming upon the peak of cold and flu season in Illinois. In an effort to keep our students healthy during this time of year, we are communicating some reminders regarding our health procedures that we ask that you adhere to in District 115.

Please DO NOT send your child to school if he/she has an acute cold, sore throat, fever, nausea/vomiting, chills, diarrhea, excessive coughing, headache, earache, skin rash, red watery eyes, or excessive nasal drainage. Your child may not return to school for 24 hours after having a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting.

Following these guidelines will assist in maintaining the health of all of our students, especially our medically-fragile students. Please stress handwashing to your children at home, as well as coughing or sneezing correctly into their sleeves.

Our custodians are doing a great job of disinfecting our classrooms and buildings daily, and giving additional attention to those schools/classrooms where there is an increase in student absences or known cultured-positive cases of Influenza A or B, or H1N1.

Sincerely,
Maribeth E. Surma

YHS video created to prompt a visit from the governor

Recently, Governor Rauner's office presented an opportunity to Illinois schools: to be chosen as a stop on his upcoming school tour. As part of the selection process, interested schools were asked to submit a brief video highlighting the great work of its teachers and students. To create the video for Yorkville High School, teachers and students collaborated to present what makes Yorkville so special: a deep sense of caring for others. Led by YHS teacher Jennifer Waldvogel, student filmmakers Christian Vergara and Andrew Rosa designed a video highlighting Fox Pride through the charitable works of National Honor Society, Key Club, SAFE, Student Council, Student Ambassadors, TALK, Adapted PE, along with the continuous empathic spirit of all YHS students and staff.   Link

State of the District Address

District 115 has put forth great effort this past year to be both transparent and engaging towards community stakeholders. Stakeholder feedback was a critical component in the development of the 2016-19 D115 Strategic Plan. In an effort to continue that engagement and ensure stakeholders are aware that the district values their input, an emphasis has been placed on ensuring community stakeholders are communicated with as to the implementation and progress of the plan.

A parent committee has been developing such an annual event for individuals residing within District 115. The goal is to go beyond a Strategic Plan presentation update and provide a venue for further engagement and connectedness between the district and community.

A District 115 Vision Update has been scheduled for Saturday, April 8 from 4-6 p.m. at Yorkville Middle School, 920 Prairie Crossing Drive.

In addition, special interest tables will be set up in the school cafeteria so after the presentation, event attendees can ask questions and get additional information on topics of interest in the district.

The tentative event schedule is as follows:
4:00-4:30 p.m.           Student Entertainment in the YMS Auditorium
4:30-5:30 p.m.           State of the District Address in the YMS Auditorium
5:30-6:00 p.m.           District Information/Interest Tables in the YMS Cafeteria

Further details to follow. Please email Cathy Anderson at [email protected] to RSVP for the event.

Teacher Institute Days

Teacher institute days provide teachers with an opportunity to learn new curriculum and teaching techniques. These professional development opportunities are designed to help teachers improve their skills, and is often an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues. The four teacher institute days scheduled during the 2016-17 school year are focused on accomplishing the objectives outlined in the district strategic plan.

District 115 teachers focus on STEM

Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) Andrea Flodberg leads a STEM enrichment math activity at Yorkville Intermediate School.
During the month of December, YMS teacher  Kristi Wille attended the CITGO Lemont Refinery's STEM workshop as a way to further enhance the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum used in local schools.

As a part of the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline initiative, and in partnership with The National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project, teachers spent the day at the Lemont Township Community Center engaging in hands-on training and interactive games learning NEED concepts. Furthermore, each workshop participant received additional resources to help students better understand the oil and gas refining process: a NEED Science of Energy Kit and a NEED Oil and Gas Kit.

CITGO has partnered with NEED to increase knowledge of energy in local schools through teacher training and energy curriculum. The goal is to encourage interest not only in STEM-related subjects, but also in oil, gas, and transportation industry careers.
