Our Instructors
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
American Sailing Association
Outstanding Instructor 2016 Awards
Bob Diamond, David Pregeant, and Chris Owczarek
Each year the American Sailing Association identifies a special group of instructors to receive their "Outstanding Instructor of the Year" recognition award. This recognition is given to a total of 30 instructors who receive the highest instructor rating from ASA student members during the given year. Out of nearly 3,000 ASA instructors worldwide only 1% (30) are chosen. Spinnaker Sailing in Redwood City had 3 instructors that were chosen as
ASA's Outstanding Instructors of the Year for 2016.
Only 4 awards were issued to instructors teaching in the entire Bay Area and 3 of those were here at Spinnaker in Redwood City.
We are extremely proud of these instructors for their personal achievements and their commitment and dedication to providing the highest level of instruction and customer satisfaction to students.
It continues to be their focus and our goals as a sailing school.
This is the 12th time Bob Diamond has received this award and for the 5th straight year. There simply is no one better.

So let's say you're somewhere out on the bay in an area that might be getting a wee bit shallow. Wouldn't it be nice to have a depth sounder right now? Well, you know what the kids would say... "There's an app for that." In fact, if you have a smart phone or any type of smart handheld device, there's an app for just about any sailing or navigating problem you might encounter.
My iPhone contains a good number of apps that I use while sailing, navigating, planning trips ... or trying to figure out how much clearance I have under the keel. Some I use frequently, some occasionally, some almost never but I'm more comfortable knowing they're there. Some are just fun if not entirely useful.
The apps you choose will depend on where you come down on philosophical questions like, How much do you want to pay for your app? How much battery use are you willing to let an app suck up? and How much tolerance do you have for complex controls? My answer to all those questions is, "Not much."
The most important question a sailor needs to answer is: Where am I? Traditionally, sailors might have answered that question by applying skills to a chart and piloting tools. Today, charts are available electronically in a number of formats, and your smart phone's GPS can locate you on them. I am currently using a phenomenal app called

Our boats
Catalina 27
A comfortable family-friendly cruiser
by Patrick Twohy
The Catalina 27
gets a bad rap from some sailing purists. But that's not fair. The boat is th
e most wid
ely produced keelboat of all time for a reason. Actually for quite a number of reasons,
among them
: simplicity, versatility, sailing qualities and comfort.
For Spinnaker Sailing Club members and students, the Catalina 27 is a seamless step up from Spinnaker's main training vessel, the Merit 25. The two boats seem quite different, and in many ways they are. But they also share some important similarities.
At 26 feet, 10 inches, the 27 is not too much longer than the Merit (w
hich measures 24 1/2 feet length overall). The two boats dock in the same size slip, and both boats draw around 4 feet (meaning how deep the boat is in the water). Both boats are very maneuverable and both handle the challenges of San Francisco Bay well.
But the 27 feels like a much different kind of boat. Down below for example, most people can stand up without hitting their heads. And speaking of heads, the 27s have on-board, enclosed bathrooms ("heads" in sailor-speak) and berthing accommodations that make the boats habitable overnight. All six of Spinnaker's Catalina 27s have wheel steering (allowing skippers to steer standing up and facing forward), self-tailing winches and inboard diesel engines.
