In Loving Memory

Thelma Elkins, an Ashby Village member and proprietor of Easy Going Travel Shop and Bookstore in Berkeley for nearly 25 years, passed away Feb. 15 at 12:53 a.m. at the age of 93. She was surrounded by her three children, a grandchild, and a caregiver. Thelma was suffering from metastatic cancer.

Thelma was born in the Bronx, New York, and moved to San Francisco in the '50s. She married Mort Elkins (deceased) during a time when both were actively resisting McCarthyism. She eventually earned a masters in social work at Cal. She practiced as a psychiatric social worker in Berkeley and Oakland for nearly 40 years. She became a well-known business owner in Berkeley, opening Easy Going Travel Shop and Bookstore after her son was given a near impossible list of items to acquire for an upcoming overseas trip. She ran it in brick and mortar form as well as online for nearly 25 years.

Plagued by the onset of macular degeneration in both eyes, she established a low-vision support group through Ashby Village and worked tirelessly to advance rights and benefits for low-vision citizens.

She leaves behind three children and six grandchildren.
