Read the monthly dish in the Arabian horse industry.
Did you know that horses are included in one of the biggest St. Patrick's Day Parades in the world? New York City's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade draws over 1 million spectators and turns downtown NYC green for the day. Is your horse ready to turn green for St. Patty's Day?
AHA sat down with Arabian horse breeders to learn more about the different breeders' programs and to gain more insight into the breeding industry. The second interview released from the Breeder Interview Series is Larry Jerome. Jerome has been in the Arabian horse industry since he was a small boy. He was fortunate enough to learn from some of the most well-known industry leaders and has taken their wisdom and created a breeding program that is known to many.

Every month, the AHA Insider showcases one of our employees. We want to give our readers an insight as to who works for AHA and what they do for the association.
DeEtta Houts-Schey
I've been with AHA since October, 2016 and am looking forward to many years to come. I am originally from Central Minnesota and grew up in a small town of 3500 people called, Staples. I needed a change of weather (Minus 20 degrees is NORMAL in the Winter), so I packed up and moved here! My family was not a horse family but I started riding with a friend at the age of 11 and was hooked! The first Arabian I fell in love with was a Mahogany Bay gelding named, Zhar at a local camp ranch I visited during the Summer. He was strictly reserved for camp guides but I was lucky enough to be allowed to ride him once and it was the most fun I'd had on 4 legs! Less than a year later I bought my first Arabian at a cattle auction for $350 and we went everywhere together.
I've lived in Scottsdale and been a groom for some Arabian horse farms, near Philadelphia working with Thoroughbred race horses and have also run my own graphic design business from home since 2007.
I don't ride anymore but loved spending time with my horses in Minnesota just hanging out and grooming them. In my spare time, I am enjoying all there is to do outdoors here in Colorado like hiking and snowshoeing, I love going to rock concerts and I also paint watercolor and acrylic paintings of Arabians. I am owned by two dogs, Turbo the German Shepherd and Matty the Aussie and have one son who is now 18 and lives in Minnesota.

AHYA Board Scholarship Program
AHYA is working to find a new way to encourage youth to participate on the AHYA Board of Directors. At Convention, it was discussed to try to fund a scholarship program for those individuals that are serving on the board. The idea behind these scholarships, is to encourage the youth to participate and have an active role in AHYA, as well as develop them as future leaders.
With the right funding, we would like to award a $1,000 scholarship to each Regional Director. We are hoping to start this scholarship fund with $22,000 - so far we have raised $7,700. Please consider having your region donating to this scholarship fund. We would like you to join us in providing opportunities to reward those outstanding youth members who are the future of our breed.
If you have any questions or would like to donate email Brenna Whitlock at [email protected].

Members Tales
A Story of a Love Being Gone, But Not Lost
Lisa Gaudio fell in love with horses at an early age. She got her first Arabian horse at the age of 24 and never looked back. Over the years, she gained a few Arabian horses, but due to personal reasons, she ended up selling all of her horses except one, an older mare who was the great-grandmother to a beautiful mare called Kyrie Eleison. Lisa had to sell Kyrie but the mare would eventually find her way back to Lisa and be responsible for a miracle that no one thought possible.

Eventually, Lisa reached a point where she wanted to find the horses she sold and have them back at home. Kyrie in particular had a soft spot in Lisa's heart because she had raised her from a foal. While at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show in 2013, Lisa, with the help of Registry Services Representative Kelly Huston, was looking on Datasource at the AHA booth looking for Kyrie. Unfortunately, there were two Kyries in the system but the woman standing next to them happened to overhear their struggle and said she knew the current owner of Kyrie. The owner was immediately contacted and Lisa was finally reunited with Kyrie.

|
Elle Vitorina at 12 hours old
|
|
Kyrie had to spend a year in rehab because she had been diagnosed with laminitis. Eventually, she was flown to Lisa's farm where Lisa was able to care for her herself, along with the professionals at UPenn New Bolton. During this time, Kyrie had ups and downs with her health which got Lisa thinking about how to keep the "spirit of Kyrie" around for a long time. She mentioned this to her vet and her vet ended up researching the possibility of harvesting Kyrie's ovaries when she passed to use in breeding offspring. It is not a very well-known practice, only three places will perform the procedure in the country and only a handful of the equine procedures have been performed - but Lisa decided she had nothing to lose from the procedure and that when the time came, they would harvest Kyrie's ovaries and would use the stud Vitorio as a sire.
On February 10, 2016 Kyrie decided it was time to walk over the

rainbow bridge to the great ranch in the sky - with the endless green pastures and plenty of shade to take an afternoon nap in. The whole UPenn team was there when Kyrie was put down because they all played such a pivotal roll in Kyrie's health journey. Once Kyrie had passed, her ovaries were immediately harvested. The ovaries were sent to New Bolten's reproduction center at Penn Vet. From there, Dr. Tamara Dobbie was able to recover 16 eggs. The eggs were shipped to Texas A&M where the process of injecting a sperm cell into each egg (invitromaturation) was performed. Four embryos came from the procedure and were eventually transferred to recipient mares.
Lisa and her husband Jimmy were ecstatic! They couldn't believe that not one, but four viable embryos came from the procedure!
The waiting game had started for Lisa and Jimmy to see how many of the embryos would survive. They did lose one embryo, but after a long wait, three beautiful foals were born - two fillies and a colt.
- Epona Elleison (filly) was the first born and was named after the Celtic Greek god Epona who is the caretaker of donkeys, mules and horses and was the spirt of the afterlife.
- Big Man in Town (colt) was the second born and was named after the song "Sherry Baby" which Lisa's father wrote.
- Elle Vitorina (filly) was the last born was named as such as a way to pay homage to Vitorio.
All three foals and their recipient mothers are at Lisa and Jimmy's farm. Lisa has purchased the recipient mares and they will eventually all go to the trainers to start their possible riding career. The foals are loving the chance to explore the outdoors and learning exciting new things on a daily. Not only are the foals considered a miracle, they are a gift from God to carry on Kyrie's legacy a little longer.
Thank you Lisa Gaudio for letting AHA share this incredible story and for giving insight into this little-known equine medical procedure.
