The OLMA Overview -- March 9, 2017
|
|
Our juniors are out and about this week as they participate in OLMA's Job Shadow program. So far, feedback has been all good. The girls are enjoying the hands-on experiences and returning to us more excited than ever about what the future holds. Students are shadowing doctors, veterinarians, accountants, marketing professionals, product developers, teachers, hotel/restaurant managers, and more. Many thanks to everyone who had a hand in making this program a success.
We're also pleased to announce that we are offering an Elite SAT Prep course for current sophomores and juniors this spring. There's more information about the program, below, but I wanted to let you know how pleased I am that we were able to make this happen for our students.
If you are eligible to donate blood, we'll take it. The second annual OLMA Blood Drive is under way right now and will continue until 7 PM tonight. Walk-ins are welcome, so come on over. Every donation saves up to three lives.
On Sunday, our seniors are sponsoring a Painting Party at 1:30 PM. The cost is $40 and includes all supplies and refreshments. Tomorrow is the last day to sign up, so please plan to join us if you can.
Have a wonderful weekend and remember to "spring ahead" in the wee hours of Sunday morning. -- M

Denise Dimapilis, Class of 2019
|
|
OLMA sophomore, Denise Dimapilis came to OLMA as a freshmen from Woodland Country Day School in Bridgeton. She liked that it was a small school and decided that a similar size would suit her well for high school. "I shadowed at OLMA and found that it offered the perfect balance of academics, athletics and sisterhood," said Denise. "Everyone was so welcoming and I love the fact that our friendships stretch beyond our own class to include the entire school."
In addition to earning first honors or better each quarter, Denise is also a member of OLMA's swim team. She competes in the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard individual relay and the 100-yard backstroke races. She's also a member of chorus and the debate, Spanish and green girls clubs.
Denise says that her favorite class is chemistry because it's a good mix of science and math -- two things she plans on putting to good use in her future career as an officer for Foreign Service. While she's still doing her research, Denise is quite sure that her future will include this type of career path. To try it out, Denise will be attending a week-long National Security and Diplomacy camp this summer in Washington, DC. While there, she will get a taste of what it's involved in keeping peace between nations and handling a crisis. Pretty impressive.
When she's not at school (or camp), Denise enjoys kick boxing, a sport that OLMA junior, Julie Nguyen, encouraged her to try. She also plays pool -- and is really good at it! If you need some tips, you now know who to ask!

OLMA Musicians Rock Preschool
|
|
If there's one thing preschool students love, it's music. On Friday, March 3rd, OLMA sophomores, Violet Bifulco (on drums) and Ashley Iveson (on guitar) visited Dallago Preschool in Vineland. They volunteered their musical talent for Delago's Arts night. Parents and students listened as they described the instruments they play. Next, Ashley and Violet performed two songs -- “Let it Go” and “Shake it Off” -- while the preschoolers and their parents played the maracas. Way to open your hearts and share your talent!

Each year, Student Council leads the school in making Easter extra special for the children they serve each week at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Students make as many Easter baskets as possible and fill them with all sorts of goodies -- and a lot of love. We still have many more to go, but are running short on supplies. If you can donate baskets, Easter grass, candy, novelty toys, gifts or stuffed animals, please bring them on in by early next week. Thank you!

Do you have a date to Prom yet? For many young women, finding a date isn't the problem. It's the cost of the dress that keeps them home on Prom night. Thanks to a program started by a student at Vineland High School, every young lady in Cumberland County will soon say "Yes" to a prom dress. OLMA wants to help, so it's time for some closet cleaning. If you have a formal or semi-formal dress that you're not planning to wear again, please bring it in ASAP. Your dress will double its value by making a second young lady's Prom dreams come true. Please see Hope Viviani with any questions.

OLMA's second annual blood drive went off without a hitch today thanks to the work of students, Dana Durham and Madison Hagerty with help from their parents. Many thanks to everyone who donated today! You helped save up to three lives each!
