It's been an amazingly wet winter, with Bay Area rainfall exceeding normal for the first time in many years.
This is welcome news, after our serious California drought. But it also brings concerns, primarily around flooding in residential areas. East Bay reservoirs and creeks are full, and the water table or groundwater under the surface is robust.
Numerous creeks and tributaries drain through West County residential areas into the San Francisco Bay.
For people living on or near creeks or water sources, this healthy water flow may mean flooding in yards, buildings, streets, commercial areas or parklands.
Fortunately, there are ways to prevent damage, protect property, and deal with flooding.
Next week, on March 8, I'm co-sponsoring a community meeting with the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and Contra Costa Flood Control on flood prevention and management.
This is a great opportunity to learn practical ways to minimize your risks and ask questions. Experts will be on hand.
