Portage schools purchases Chromebooks for 9th, 10th graders

PORTAGE, MI - Portage Public Schools hopes to outfit all 9th and 10th graders this fall with a Chromebook as the district continues its effort to provide a computing device for every student.

The school board Monday approved the purchase of 420 Acer C740 Chromebooks for $98,700 to launch the district's secondary 1-1 computing initiative. Thousands of other such devices have already been acquired for teachers and elementary students.

The students will use the Chromebook all day in school and then can take them home. The devices will be filtered 24/7, but Dan Vomastek, Portage schools information and technology services director, said his department is "working through a couple of technical glitches - most notably filtering."

The expectation was to provide 9th graders with a device this school year, but after a further purchase this summer both 9th and 10th graders can look forward to getting a Chromebook in the fall.

A large purchase of Chromebooks last summer has proven to be somewhat of a financial bonus for the district. Those were bought though the Michigan Technology Readiness Infrastructure Grant program.

As part of that program, the district received $149,749 in rebates for the past purchase. As a result, the 420 Chromebooks for the secondary students will be purchased with that rebate money.
