"Poverty underlies every manifestation of serious challenges to families, children, aging persons, refugees and all the populations we see every day [as social workers and nurses]," said Dean Marilyn Flynn at this year's All School Day, whose theme was "Human Dignity: How Poverty Affects Human Rights." The event featured speakers from various areas of study, including law, filmmaking, social work and nursing, to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing the effects of poverty.  Read more

The USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work led the data collection for the annual Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, overseen by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, a joint county-city agency. The census of men, women and children is essential to ensuring more targeted resources to those who are most in need.  Read more

Alzheimer's disease in African Americans is approaching a public health crisis, with evidence suggesting they are at greater risk for developing Alzheimer's dementia than any other group in the United States. Recruiting African Americans for clinical trials remains a struggle. Associate Professor Karen Lincoln hopes a new texting campaign will change some minds.  Read more
SOCIAL IMPACT
Earth's increasingly destructive climate is prompting social work leaders to focus on environmental change as a Grand Challenge. "People most affected by climate change tend to be the poor, older adults, children and families, and people with a history of mental health problems - populations that are typically the focus of social work practice," said Professor Lawrence Palinkas.  Read more
