EVERYONE IS IRISH FOR A DAY

St. Patrick
The man known as "the Patron Saint of Ireland" was actually born in Scotland. He was captured by Irish pirates and spent 6 years as a slave in Ireland before returning to his family. He became a cleric and later returned to the Emerald Isle to promote the practice of Christianity. Read more...

March 17th
This date is widely believed to be the date of St. Patrick's death and is observed worldwide.

Wearing o' the green
This tradition is attributed to Ireland's nickname "the Emerald Isle" and supporters of the Irish Rebellion, who were identified by their green garments.

Shamrocks
Legend credits St. Patrick as using the three-leafed shamrock to illustrate the concept of the holy trinity to his followers.

Leprechauns
These mythical creatures are often depicted as small bearded men who cause mischief in Irish folklore.

Irish Fare
Many hearty dishes are enjoyed on the day, but Irish Stew is widely accepted as a St. Patrick's Day staple. Treat friends and family to this hearty dish on the 17th-- or any time of the year.
The best part of this recipe? Once it's in the slow cooker, you're free to enjoy the festivities yourself.

Drinks
There's always Guinness, Bailey's or the traditional tinted-green lager. If your taste runs to something more exotic-- try out one of these:

Movies
There are many Hollywood adaptleprechaun_dj.jpgations of Irish life, but according to Chatelaine, here are a few that are actually set in Ireland, or star real Irish actors:

The long winter months make us eager to get out and socialize.
Fortunately, spring is just around the corner (if you believe that groundhog nonsense!).

Winning a lottery or coming into a fortune by some other stroke of luck are common themes on March 17th. Most of us are not that fortunate.
Why not take the money spent on gaming or buying lotto tickets and turn it into a more sound investment strategy?
