BFP E-NEWS
Message from the CEO
Research shows where families have access, voice, and ownership, outcomes greatly improve.

In honor of National Parent Leadership month, I would like to recognize the important role our family partners and advocates play in our local System of Care (SOC) and the importance of forging strong and positive partnerships with families who enter the child welfare system.

It was a priority for the Brevard community for Community Based Care to operate a family-centered system. What does it mean to be youth-driven and family-centered when involved in a mandated system? How can families be equal partners when the system has ultimate authority over decision making?

First, it is important to understand approximately 86% of families in care have a goal of reunification. This means the better equipped and strengthened families become as a result of their involvement with our SOC, the safer children will be when they return home.

Therefore, early engagement and fostering a positive connection with families helps to ensure we are meeting the goal and priority of operating a family-centered system and that families who exit care do so with a network of supports available in their time of need.

BFP Celebrates Black History Month
Brevard Family Partnership celebrates Black History Month by recognizing its employees, volunteers, partners and members of the community that contribute to the rich heritage of African Americans.

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history.

This year's Black History Month theme "Crisis in Education", set by the  Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), examines the crucial role that education has played in the history of African Americans from times of slavery, through the Civil War, to present day.

Casey Excellence for Children Award
Congratulations to Lou Ann and Jonathan Hawes of Palm Bay for receiving the 2017 Casey Excellence for Children Award.

These awards, presented at a reception in Seattle on January 9, recognize outstanding individuals and leaders who have demonstrated distinguished work, exceptional leadership and relentless dedication in improving child welfare in America.

Lou Ann and Jonathan have been dedicated volunteers and advocates with Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Brevard County, Florida, Inc., for more than six years. The couple adopted their 5-year-old granddaughter after she entered foster care following her father's death. They help advocate for relative caregivers and their families to receive needed support, and build bridges with community providers and support programs.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the children of Brevard.

Children and Youth in Care Want You to Know...
In October of 2012, Brevard Family Partnership began the development of a system transformation project which entailed establishing a framework for the incorporation of trauma informed care (TIC) across the community of practice.

The goal of this transformation initiative is to develop and foster broad community awareness and knowledge regarding the impact of trauma on children and families; and upon those who serve and care for them.

Trauma-informed care is an evidenced based approach and a paradigm shift from one that asks, "What's wrong with you?" to one that asks, "What has happened to you?"

Special Thank You
We would like to give a special thank you to one of our generous community partners, Gabriel Rothblatt, who hosted some of our foster youth for a special screening of Hidden Figures on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  This special event was part of an initiative called #launchthedream, where funds were being raised to sponsor a rocket competition for disadvantaged girls interested in STEM careers.  Thank you for including our youth in this special event!
Congratulations
