Llama Llama Red Pajama, and other Special Guests Visit Berkeley Preschools
This past Thursday, students in Berkeley schools joined millions of people in more than 100 countries for
World Read Aloud Day
, designed to celebrate the importance of sharing stories and reading aloud. A number of District staff, parents, and community members volunteered to read
Llama Llama Red Pajama
in every preschool classroom.
Among the many special guest readers were Belinda Stuckey, BUSD Employee Benefits Specialist (top photo), and Superintendent Evans (above). To the children's delight, Llama Llama made a surprise appearance.
Early last week, in anticipation of World Read Aloud Day, students at
two elementary schools welcomed two popular children's book authors
, with Cragmont School hosting Annie Barrows, author of the
Ivy and Bean
series, and Thousand Oaks virtually hosting Laura Shovan, author of
Last Fifth Grade Class at Emerson Elementary
, via Google Hangout.

BUSD Parents/Guardians: We'd like your feedback!
Will you please take a few minutes to provide the Berkeley Unified School District with feedback about your child(ren)'s experience in our schools by completing the District family survey?
The survey, available in English and Spanish, officially opens Wednesday, Feb. 22 and closes on March 8. Our A+ News readers can already take the survey today by clicking on "English" or "Spanish" above.
The survey should take less than 15 minutes to complete, is anonymous, and has an open-ended section for you to provide us with your thoughts and ideas.
Your participation provides us with important feedback on the programs we've designed to meet the goals of the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).
In March, each school's School Governance/Site Council and the LCAP Parent Advisory Council will receive the information gathered from this survey to help with program and funding decisions.

National Honors for BHS Jazz Students
Congratulations to Berkeley High's Jazz Combo-A for winning first place in their division in the annual Charles Mingus High School Competition this past weekend in New York City.
Congratulations Alexis Angulo, Oliver Cooper, Brian Hingerty, Jasim Perales and Owen Storey!
BHS jazz program Director Sarah Cline called the festival, in which students perform and immerse themselves in Mingus' music, "a great way to help pass uncompromising brilliance along to the next generation."

Update: BHS Redesign Plan Moves Forward
The School Board voted unanimously at a Feb. 15
special meeting to support further development of a proposed Berkeley High "Redesign," focusing chiefly on the 9th grade beginning in the Fall of 2018.
Currently, students in all four grades, 9th through 12th, are divided among five different, learning communities. The Redesign calls for a "universal 9th grade" with students waiting until 10th grade to enter one of the learning communities. The plan also includes the possibility of a "modified" block schedule.
The Board asked the Redesign Team to return with a final proposal for a first reading on May 17 with possible approval at the June 14 meeting. For in-depth information, see the

Next Parent Champion Series Workshop Saturday, March 4
The BUSD Office of Family Engagement and Equity is hosting a series of parent/guardian/family workshops.
The purpose of the series is to empower parents to use their social, economic, and parent capital to leverage the parent voice for strategic action so that students of color achieve better academic outcomes.

Educational Research Symposium 2017: Presentations Available Online
Each year the District's Research, Evaluation & Assessment Department puts on a symposium to highlight some of the latest educational research and lessons learned about teaching and learning. If you missed the Symposium on January 21, you can take a look at some of the research presented here.

New Year, More
Schools Fund Grants Awarded
In January, the Berkeley Public Schools Fund approved the last round of Strategic Impact Grants for the 2016-2017 school year, bringing this year's total to over $178,000. These grants involve collaboration between teachers or coordination with an outside organization on a project that goes beyond a single classroom.
This year's grants-which include Community Partnerships with organizations such as Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley Symphony, Community Resources for Science, and others-supported teacher professional development across grade levels and subjects, and almost $76,000 for arts programs and over $47,000 in STEM grants.
