19 things to give up for Lent that aren't chocolate

This is copied from an article by Monsignor Keith Derouen, Ponder These Things.  I thought they were worth sharing as we start the lent season.

  1. "Fear: God is on my side. In Him I am more than a conqueror. (See Romans 8)
  2. The need to please everyone: I can't please everyone anyway. There is only one I need to strive to please.
  3. Envy: I am blessed. My value is not found in my possessions, but in my relationship with my Heavenly Father.
  4. Impatience: God's timing is the perfect timing.
  5. Sense of entitlement: The world does not owe me anything. God does not owe me anything. I live in humility and grace.
  6. Bitterness and Resentment: The only person I am hurting by holding onto these is myself.
  7. Blame: I am not going to pass the buck. I will take responsibility for my actions.
  8. Gossip and Negativity: I will put the best construction on everything when it comes to other people. I will also minimize my contact with people who are negative and toxic and bring other people down.
  9. Comparison: I have my own unique contribution to make and there is no one else like me.
  10. Fear of failure: You don't succeed without experiencing failure. Just make sure you fall forward.
  11. A spirit of poverty: Believe with God that there is always more than enough and never a lack.
  12. Feelings of unworthiness: You are fearfully and wonderfully made by your creator. (see Psalm 139)
  13. Doubt: Believe God has a plan for you that is beyond anything you could imagine. The future is brighter than you could ever realize.
  14. Self-pity: God comforts us in our sorrow so that we can comfort others with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
  15. Retirement: As long as you are still breathing, you are here for a reason. You have a purpose to influence others for Christ. That does not come to an end until the day we die.
  16. Excuses: A wise man once said, if you need an excuse, any excuse will do.
  17. Lack of counsel: Wise decisions are rarely made in a vacuum.
  18. Pride: Blessed are the humble.
  19. Worry: God is in control and worrying will not help."
These are things to give up during Lent and everyday as we live as the redeemed children of God.

LWML members are collecting eye glass for people in South America
glasses_on_book.jpg
LWML is collecting used eye glasses for people in South America. Many people in South America are unable to buy glasses as the cost is a year's pay or more. The glasses we collect are sent to a collection center in Michigan where they are cleaned, repaired and prescriptions determined.  This summer volunteers will go to the chosen country for distribution. There is a box in the narthex to put your glasses in.

Thanks for your help in bringing the blessing of sight to those in need !

Easter Breakfast
cooks
Easter is Sunday April 16th.  Once again we will have breakfast in between services from 8:00 am to 9:30 am.  Join us for food and fellowship. Youth and kids will have special Sunday School activities beginning at 9:15 am.

Please contact Christine Fauss at 913-645-4003 to volunteer to provide food or to volunteer for set up and clean up for this special event.

Thank you in advance to all who volunteer to make these meals special!

Would you like to attend the Lutheran Valley Retreat Summer Camp?

Summer is fast approaching and we are just a few weeks away from registration opening for the Kansas District Summer Camp at LVR in Colorado (July 16 - 21). This camp is for high school students who will graduate from high school in 2017 to 2021. This includes the current 8th grade class.

Registration opens March 1, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. These spots are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, so don't delay in letting us know you want to attend!

The Youth Group will pay the deposit of $100 per youth for all COS youth.  This is required to hold the registration spot.  This will be applied to the total cost  - $50 is non-refundable. ( $425 - includes transportation, camp fees, meals at camp, and spiritual life programming. Travel day's meals are not included.) The remaining cost must be covered by you - $325 .

After May 17th, NO MONEY is refunded unless a substitution can be made from the waiting list.  If a substitution can be made, then a refund is made minus $50 which is still non-refundable.  Substitutions and refunds must be handled by Pam Amey.  $50 of the registration fee must be also paid back to the youth group if you cancel.

ALL forms, including the Physical, are due to Gerry and Michelle Eickhoff by March 19th to hold your registration spot. Youth must provide a physician signed physical evaluation form from a physical evaluation done within the prior 16 months to camp dates. School/Sports physicals are acceptable. All the forms can be downloaded at the District Summer Camp Website: http://kseducationalservices.yolasite.com/lvr.php  or see Gerry & Michelle for forms.

If you have any questions please Gerry and Michelle Eickhoff, Youth Group Leaders or call Brian Amey, the Kansas Summer Camp Director, or Pam Amey, the Registration and Forms Coordinator (316-305-5049 bdamey@holycrosslutheran.net).

The Youth Group would like to say THANK YOU!

The Youth Group would like to say "Thank You" to all of those who supported the youth through the purchase of a casserole.  This money will be put into the youth group fund for the next national Youth Gathering in Minnesota in 2019; as well as our camps the kids will be attending.

Thank you again!  We truly appreciate your continued generosity and support of our youth!

Save a Label and help us raise money for our youth group!

The Best Choice Save-A-Label program is an extremely successful program, which helps non-profit organizations raise money. These groups earn $.03 for each Best Choice UPC symbol redeemed.  It's easy, we just save the labels of Best Choice products for cash.  Be sure to save the UPC portion (proof of purchase). Our youth group will earn $30 in cash for each bundle of 1,000 UPC's sent in.  We have a box in the narthex to collect the labels.  So please bring in your labels and help us raise some funds!

"You"th group goes to Nursing Home during Sunday School to deliver Valentines
hearts-icon.jpg
On Valentine's Day, the 12th - high school classes (a.k.a - youth groupers) made and assembled 40 valentine gift bags.  We then made our way to Vintage Park in Louisburg to deliver them to the residence residing there and wish them a Happy Valentine's Day.  But we could not deliver them to the residence as we had planned.  The flu bug had hit.  So we just left our cards and gift bags with the nursing staff who promised to tell the residence that we were there to wish them a blessed Valentine's Day!   The youth would like to say "Thank You" to all of those who helped to make valentine's cards.  They were very much appreciated!

Mark your calendars for Casserole Sale

Each participating youth is to make a casserole (oven-ready) and bring it on Sunday, Mar. 12.  We will be selling the casseroles between services and after 2nd service.  Please provide name of casserole and directions for cooking your casserole (i.e. - oven temperature and time for cooking).  Also provide a thank you for the purchase!  We will sell each casserole for $15.  The more casseroles we have = the more money we can add towards the next National Youth Gathering in 2019 or summer camps.

Thank you for your help!
Gerry and Michelle Eickhoff

Still looking for unused gaming systems, controllers and games!

Do you have an unused PlayStation 1, 2, 3; Xbox; GameCube or Wii (with controllers) sitting around the house not being used AND in good working condition?  Do you have any games for PlayStation 2, GameCube or Wii rated "E" that you don't play anymore? Then please think about donating it to our youth group!  We are looking for some of these to use for our lock-ins and get togethers with the youth!   If you have any of the above and are willing to donate it to the youth, please contact Gerry or Michelle Eickhoff at: gmicough@hotmail.com or 913-837-5276.
