Florida Atlantic University welcomed a record number of National Merit Scholars for the fall 2019 semester. A total of 35 National Merit Scholars are enrolled this semester and 11 of those finalists are now attending the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. Since 2000, 28 National Merit Finalists have attended the College. The average GPA for the incoming 2019 class is 4.16. The average SAT score is 1300, and the average ACT score is 28.8. Approximately 25% are the first in their family to attend college, and 62% are from underrepresented groups. Read more

U.S. News & World Report ranked FAU in its list of “Top Public Schools” in the nation for the first time in the university’s history. U.S. News & World Report also placed FAU at No. 45 in the nation in the magazine’s new “Social Mobility” ranking. Read more
Awards

The Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine selected Andia Chaves Fonnegra, Ph.D., an assistant professor of biology in Florida Atlantic University’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute as a recipient of its 2019 Early-Career Research Fellowship. Her research focuses on enhancing the management of marine ecosystems by determining how ecological interactions are altered by anthropogenic activities and global impacts such as climate change and pollution. Congratulations!
 
Aspiring neuroscientists can now work side-by-side with world-renowned researchers thanks to a new National Science Foundation undergraduate summer site award. The Summer Integrative Neuroscience Experience (SINE) for Undergraduates at FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus at Jupiter will host an intensive program that provides opportunities for talented undergraduate students from across the country to participate in cutting edge neuroscience research. Students will have the opportunity to work in laboratories at FAU Jupiter, Scripps Research or the Max Plank Florida Institute for Neuroscience.
Palm Beach Illustrated's Education Awards

Florida Atlantic University received Palm Beach Illustrated's "Award for Institutional Excellence." "Educator of the Year," finalists Laura Vernon, Ph.D., associate dean of academic affairs and research of FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Yash Bhagwanji, Ph.D., associate professor, College of Education were recognized during Palm Beach Illustrated’s 2019 Education Awards.  

Randy D. Blakely, Ph.D., executive director of the FAU Brain Institute and a professor of biomedical science in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, received the Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2019 STEM Innovation Awards. The South Florida Science Center and Stiles-Nicholson Foundation hosted the second annual STEM Innovation Awards on Sept. 7, to recognize leadership, service, and collaboration in the fields of STEM.

Florida Atlantic University Brain Institute 's Ascend Program is a semi-finalist for a Healthier Jupiter mini-grant! Come out to the Healthy Community Grant BBQ on Oct. 12 at the Jupiter Community Center from 1-3:30 p.m. to cast your vote in support the FAU Brain Institute's Ascend Program!


FAU Jupiter hosted Former Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente, Palm Beach County Bar Association President Jessica Callow, Annette Pitts Executive Director of The Florida Law Related Education Association & Judge Cymonie Rowe for an interactive discussion on Constitution Day. FAU Jupiter Student Government and the Palm Beach County Association for Women Lawyers sponsored the event that discussed some leading constitutional issues, such as Freedom of Speech, the Right to Bear Arms and Racial Discrimination. FAU Jupiter Hosts the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce,
State Legislators, and Municipal Leaders

On August 23, 2019, members of the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce’s Government Affairs committee hosted a legislative roundtable at FAU’s Jupiter campus. Invited to the discussion were the ten mayors with municipalities in the north county region, state legislators, representatives from Palm Beach State College and President John Kelly. The roundtable provided stakeholders the opportunity to engage directly with their elected officials, get an update on higher education initiatives in their region, and discuss shared legislative priorities for the upcoming 2020 Legislative Session.
Faculty Spotlight

Terje Hoim Ph.D. was recently named the interim associate dean of academic affairs of  Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University at Jupiter. For the past three years, Dr. Hoim has served the college as chair of math and sciences. Originally from Estonia, Dr. Hoim received her Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics from Kent State University. She joined the college in 2003 and has received multiple awards for her teaching and advising as a faculty member. Timothy Steigenga, Ph.D., interim dean of Wilkes Honors College noted, “Dr. Hoim has played a critical role in the college leadership team for the past three years and has a clear understanding of the responsibilities associated with the associate dean position. I am grateful to Terje for agreeing to step into this role during an extremely busy year of celebration and transition for the college.”

The Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) will host the 5th Annual Charity Softball Game and Kids Fest. The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. at the Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Stanley Steemer will play John C. Cassidy Air Conditioning from 11 a.m.–12 p.m. First Service Residential will play the winner from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Come out and enjoy arts and crafts, bounce houses, inflatable slides, autograph signing and stick around for the giveaways. Tickets are $10 for kids. Adults are free.
