With the promise of spring just around the corner, we can't help but feel inspired by the thoughts of warmer weather that is surely on the way.
There is plenty of excitement taking place in the tourism industry here in Durham Region this month! At Durham Tourism, we are looking forward to the sixth annual Central Counties and Durham Tourism Partnership Symposium at the end of March, and are thrilled to announce that we have launched two all-new maps promoting cycling and fishing experiences in Durham.

Elevate Your Experience at the
Central Counties
and Durham Tourism Partnership Symposium
There is still time to register to attend the 2017 Central Counties and Durham Tourism Partnership Symposium!
Along with Central Counties Tourism, we are pleased to invite all stakeholders to join us on
March 29
, at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Clarington, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This year's theme, Elevate Your Experience, is sure to motivate you to take your tourism business to new heights and connect with ideas, opportunities and your peers.
We look forward to providing our valued stakeholders with a day filled with networking opportunities, important tourism updates, and of course, our keynote presenters: Todd Lucier, co-founder of the Tourism Cafe Canada and Northern Edge Algonquin; Andrew Wiens, International DMO manager for TripAdvisor; and John Draper, founder of Together We Rock! A series of informative breakout sessions will also be available for participants to attend.

Durham Tourism releases the all-new Durham Region Fishing Map!
Durham Tourism is thrilled to announce that the all-new Durham Region Fishing Map is now available in print and online!
This map was designed to assist seasoned and recreational anglers in exploring Durham Region's large and welcoming fishing community. Durham boasts a unique mix of urban and rural areas, and about 20 varieties of Ontario's favourite fish, while providing world class fishing opportunities to residents and visitors year-round.
Features of this map include a detailed listing of fishing locations, marinas, launch sites, and key information about the fishing varieties inhabiting Durham Region's impressive lakes, rivers and creeks.

Tourism Business Retention and Expansion project aims to grow tourism industry in Brock Township
The Township of Brock and the Region of Durham are working together on a new Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) initiative focused on existing tourism businesses in the township.
Partnership support is being provided by Durham Tourism, the Brock Board of Trade, Durham Workforce Authority and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
The goals of the project are to retain local businesses and support organizations more effectively, to help grow the tourism industry in Brock Township. The community-based business visitation project will see trained volunteers conduct confidential interviews with tourism-related businesses in Brock Township.
Once interviews are completed, aggregated survey data will be analyzed to identify opportunities to improve the local Brock tourism environment.
Brock tourism businesses and community volunteers are encouraged to participate.

National Canadian Film Day 150 takes place April 19
Reel Canada's National Canadian Film Day 150 is a coast-to-coast-to-coast celebration of Canadian Cinema and Canada's 150th Anniversary.
This event is considered to be the world's largest film festival ever, and will be held on
April 19. Durham Region's Film Office is proud to announce that Township of Brock and Town of Ajax communities have been chosen as host sites for this event.
The Beaverton Special Events committee has also organized a free all-day cultural event to include Durham's rich film heritage and talents. This event will include educational workshops, film screenings presented by Reel Canada, and an awards ceremony to honour Durham residents making significant contributions to the film industry.
Film events are planned for Thorah Public School, Lakeview Manor and the Beaverton Town Hall, ending with an evening Gala event. Screenings include: Passchendaele, A Bear Named Winnie, A Place to Stand and Edwin Boyd Citizen Gangster. For more details, visit

The Town of Ajax is participating in this nation-wide festival through TIFF's Canada on Screen program. A free screening of The Sweet Hereafter

'Tourism Now' Website Edition workshop offered to Uxbridge business owners
Tourism business owners in Uxbridge are invited to participate in the Tourism Now Uxbridge - New
Website
Edition workshop, taking place at Blue Heron Books in Uxbridge on April 20, from 1 to 3 p.m.
This two-hour, hands-on workshop was designed
by RTO6 Central Counties Tourism to provide tourism operators and industry partners with an overview of the current
opportunities available. These opportunities include programs, support, strategic marketing resources, and technical website support for profiling your business at the all-new DiscoverUxbridge.ca, and the Central Counties consumer website YorkDurhamHeadwaters.ca.

What's new in Sport Tourism?

Cycling is on the map in Durham Region! Get your copy of the all-new 2017 Durham Cycle Tours Map
Sport Durham is pleased to announce the release of the updated Durham Cycle Tours Map!
Designed to offer experienced recreational cyclists with valuable information to plan the perfect cycling excursion in Durham Region, the 2017 map includes four new routes, developed in collaboration with local partners and cyclists, and a list of 98 Ontario By Bike certified businesses, ready to welcome cyclists to their locations.
A new section on trip planning, with reference to up-to-date road conditions, has also been included in this map to assist cyclists with planning an adventure that is uniquely tailored to them.
Local bicycle-friendly businesses are encouraged to continue to work together to advance cycle tourism in Durham, and we urge you to showcase your business by certifying with
Ontario By Bike if you haven't already.
We would also like to mention that we recently attended the Toronto International Bike Show, where we had the opportunity to partner with United Way Durham, the Town of Ajax, the Township of Brock, the Municipality of Clarington, the Township of Uxbridge, and the Durham Mountain Biking Association, to promote cycling and mountain biking in Durham Region. Congratulations to Mary Lou Hamilton from Brooklin, who won the Durham Cycling prize pack giveaway at this event, which included contributions from booth partners, The Hilton Garden Inn (Ajax), Tyrone Mills, The Hive Bed and Breakfast and Northern Cycle.

Oshawa to host 2018 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships
The 2018 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships has been awarded to the City of Oshawa! This event will take place at the Tribute Communities Centre from
February 23 to 25, 2018, and we couldn't be more thrilled to have a fabulous event like this coming to Durham Region.
It is anticipated that the 2018 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships will bring about 40 teams and more than 800 skaters from across the country to the City of Oshawa. This is an incredible opportunity to showcase Oshawa and Durham Region and our impressive array of tourism assets.
As an enthusiastic local partner, Sport Durham is looking forward to continuing to support and work alongside the City of Oshawa, Tribute Communities Centre, Oshawa Skating Club, Whitby Ice Fyre, Skate Canada and other community partners to ensure the success of the 2018 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships, and establish a legacy plan.

Ontario increasing opportunities for women and girls in sport
A news release was recently issued by the Province of Ontario - Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport stating that Ontario is planning to increase opportunities for women and girls in sport. New initiatives were unveiled by Premier Kathleen Wynne and Tourism, Culture and Sport Minister Eleanor McMahon, promoting equal and fair opportunities in the areas of programs, training and coaching.
Sport Durham looks forward to seeing how opportunities for women and girls participating in sport and recreation will be improved through these initiatives!
