Associate Dean Positions
within Arts and Science

Associate Dean (Studies) in the Faculty of Arts and Science
 
There is a vacancy for an Associate Dean (Studies) in the Faculty of Arts and Science beginning July 1, 2017.
 
Faculty members within the Faculty of Arts and Science are invited to apply for this position, which involves shared leadership in management of the Student Services Division, regulations and policies, student appeal decisions, student advising, progression decisions and cases of academic integrity; and primary responsibility for international student initiatives and support, upper-year enrolment management, registration, transfer pathways, and reporting/data analysis to inform strategic planning on student-related matters.
 
Experience in all aspects of the undergraduate student experience, including student advising, degree eligibility and program development is important.  The position will be of particular interest to faculty members who have served as an Undergraduate Chair, and/or served on an Undergraduate Studies or Curriculum Committee at the Departmental and/or Faculty level.

Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in the Faculty of Arts and Science
 
There is a vacancy for the Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in the Faculty of Arts and Science beginning July 1, 2017.
 
Faculty members within the Faculty of Arts and Science are invited to apply for this position, which involves leading and coordinating enhancements in teaching and learning, curricular innovations, and quality assurance across the Faculty
 
Experience in all aspects of teaching and learning, including curriculum development, course design, blended and online teaching formats, as well as pedagogical innovation and evidence-based practices, is important. In addition, applicants should be familiar with the Cyclical Program Review Process (Quality Assurance).

Prizes for Excellence in Research Public Lectures

The annual Prizes for Excellence in Research Public Lectures will occur on Monday, April 3, 2017 from 4:30-6:30pm in Grant Hall. The Prizes for Excellence in Research are Queen's highest form of research excellence recognition, and are awarded annually to five outstanding scholars.
 
This year, the speakers will be:
  • Gauvin Bailey (Art History and Art Conservation) - A Baroque Palace in the Haitian Rainforest
  • James R. Cordy (School of Computing) - This Means That: Programming by Transformation
  • Stephen Vanner (Medicine) - Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Light at the End of the Tunnel

Call For Proposals: The David Edney Research Travel Award
Due Date:  March 17, 2017
 
Opportunity
This annual award provides two graduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Science with an opportunity to study and do research in Paris, France, for up to two months in the summer in a fully-equipped apartment owned by Queen's alumnus, Professor David Edney. The opportunity comes with a stipend of up to $1,700 to support expenses related to research, travel and cultural experiences.
 
Eligibility
Two students will be selected on the basis of academic excellence, merit, and the quality of the proposal. The award will be available to funding-eligible Master's or Ph.D. level students enrolled in a graduate department or program in any Faculty of Arts and Science discipline. Successful applicants will be required to write a brief summary of the impact of the award on their research to be provided to the donor.
 
Applicants should submit a 500-word letter of application, including project and research details, with a copy of transcripts, to the office of the Vice-Dean in the Faculty of Arts & Science (care of Diane Reid, reiddm@queensu.ca ). The recipient of the award will be selected by a committee chaired by the Vice-Dean, and consisting of three faculty members and a representative from Arts and Science Advancement.
 
The deadline for submission is March 17, 2017.
The successful applicants will be notified by April 3, 2017, and have access to the apartment for up to two months between May 5, 2017 and August 31, 2017.

Principles and practises used in private-sector corporate communications, marketing and branding can be applied directly to science institutions and science outreach. The concepts of branding, brand identities, target audiences, customer profiles, customer life cycle can help a science institution-a science "brand"-achieve its goals.
