Dear Members of the College of Medicine Community -

I am delighted to share the news that Darin P. Trelka, M.D., Ph.D., has been named the 2017 Distinguished Teacher of the Year, FAU's highest teaching honor.

Introduced in 1969, this recognition is awarded to the teacher who, in the eyes of the student selection committee, represents the highest level of excellence in teaching, student advising and service to the university, the community and to one's academic discipline.

In her nomination letter to support Dr. Trelka, second-year medical student Sophie Green wrote about Dr. Trelka's impact on her and her peers. "My classmates and I were inspired to truly understand the complex material and he was there to guide and challenge us along the way. He encouraged us to learn from our mistakes and draw connections to deepen our level of understanding. It is traits like these that make Dr. Trelka a professor whom I admire and hold in the highest professional regard," she wrote.

As part of this honor, Dr. Trelka will deliver the keynote address at the University Honors Convocation April 19.

Dr. Trelka is an Assistant Professor of Integrated Medical Science and Director of Anatomical Programs. He joined the College in August 2014 and teaches anatomical sciences, while assisting in the pathology laboratory curriculum and facilitating group learning activities.

Dr. Trelka is board-certified in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology and has been a medical examiner and coroner in Virginia, Ohio and Florida. He is the former Deputy Chief and Interim Chief Medical Examiner of Broward County Florida as well as the former director of the Forensic Pathology fellowship training program at the Office of the Broward County Medical Examiner and Trauma Services. Dr. Trelka has co-authored both a textbook on infant and child death investigation and an atlas of forensic histopathology  in addition to  having written textbook chapters in both forensic pathology and death investigation. He has been an invited speaker on those topics both locally and nationally.

Please join me in congratulating Darin on this singular honor!

Sincerely,

Phil
