Red Dividere
A joint statement from JFCS and JFS at this time of uncertainty
Many people from the Jewish and broader communities have heightened concerns for their safety due to the recent targeting of Jewish Community Centers and other Jewish institutions locally and nationwide by individuals who have called in bomb threats and conveyed other hateful messages. Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis (JFCS) and Jewish Family Service of St. Paul (JFS) offer support, counseling, and resources to assist individuals and families at this time of disruption and uncertainty.

Judy Halper,
JFCS CEO
What does the term "basic needs" mean to you? I imagine many of us would say clean air and water, access to quality healthcare, good schools, green space for recreation, and affordable housing, to name a few.

One additional item to add to that list is nutritious food. March is Minnesota FoodShare month, and we urge our supporters to make it a priority. There are so many ways we can help ensure that all Minnesotans have adequate nutritious food to eat. For example, March is a great month for donating to foodshelves, volunteering time to help at one, or getting involved in advocacy to prevent hunger from being a reality for too many of our neighbors. In fact, 20% of Hennepin County residents are food insecure on any given day. We can do better!
Renewing Life:
A uniquely comforting support group
Are you struggling with a chronic disease such as MS, Lupus, Fibromyalgia or Diabetes? Have you been diagnosed with cancer? If so, you and/or your family member caregivers may want to participate in an upcoming series called Renewing Life.

"Renewing Life provided me with a safe environment to reflect and openly share my feelings, life-changing experiences and challenges I was facing. The facilitators were compassionate, understanding, patient and provided various ways to handle life at the moment and in the future. The workbook was invaluable. The commonality amongst the participants was comforting in a sense...I was no longer alone. This was a wonderful program to have participated in." - Patti M.

An Unexpected Gift Significantly Impacts the
Lives of Others

In early December of 2016, Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis (JFCS) received a call from a perspective donor. We were unfamiliar with his connection to JFCS, and in fact, he lived nearly 60 miles from the Twin Cities. He shared with us that two of his immediate family members had received exceptional and compassionate care through our Counseling Services over 20 years ago.

Did you know: Hunger in Our Midst

Sometimes a basic need such as having enough food to eat is the most pressing concern of the people we serve at Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis (JFCS). One in 10 Minnesotans is food insecure on a regular basis, which means they lack consistent access to adequate food. And contrary to persistent stereotypes, we may not recognize the neighbor who is food insecure. Often it is a senior too proud to ask for help or a working family with children having trouble making ends meet.

Ten percent of seniors in Minnesota report being threatened by hunger. In the past five years, the number of food shelf visits by seniors rose almost 24 percent. That increase is expected to continue as more Baby Boomers turn 60.

Thursday, March 23 is National Puppy Day!

Why not celebrate by showing off your cuddly, furry, four-pawed friends at AlterCare! Participants of JFCS' Adult Day Progam love when we visit with our puppies? It might just be the best hour of their week. All you need is your loving dog and your up-to-date vaccination record.

Join us: National Puppy Day Puppy Parade at AlterCare
When: Thursday, March 23 @ 11 a.m.
Where: Deikel AlterCare on the campus of Sholom Home West, 3620 Phillips Parkway, St. Louis Park.

Good Deeds Day is April 2. Join JFCS in participating

Good Deeds Day is an annual tradition of good deeds. All over the world, hundreds of thousands choose to volunteer and help others, putting into practice the simple idea that every single person can do something good, be it large or small, to improve the lives of others and positively change the world.
Join JFCS in participating in this  international day of service. Help deliver Passover bags o n April 2 !

Celebrate Good Deeds Day by delivering Passover bags filled with ritual foods and other items to help those who otherwise may not be able to observe the holiday.

We are excited to offer our volunteers a free Good Deeds Day
t-shirt while supplies last as they come to pick up their Passover bags to deliver.

Can't help on Sunday, April 2? A few spots still remain for bag assembly on Thursday, March 30.

Keeping the Spirit Alive:
Through the eyes of a Memory Care provider
Starting when I was young, my mom encouraged me to let my light shine in everything I did. This led me through college as I studied Sociology and Studio Art. It followed me into my first internship in a senior living community where I discovered the magic of therapeutic recreation. It followed me as I pursued a career in that field, perfectly marrying my two passions to serve others and employ my creativity. I have had the opportunity to let my light shine at two senior living campuses as an activities coordinator. In each setting I have focused on residents in memory care, which I consider to be a true privilege.
