Thought of the Week

We hope to see you at Midwest Academy on Wednesday, March 29, at 7 pm, for a seminar titled "Mindfulness at Home and School."

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present moment. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance without judging them as good or bad.

The practice of mindfulness can be a great tool in working with students. Research has proven that mindfulness significantly increases pro-social behavior and emotional regulation. Children and parents who participate in mindfulness activities report feeling that their home and school is a happier and healthier place.

During the seminar, our guest presenter will provide information about mindfulness and will teach techniques to help students, parents and teachers incorporate it into their daily routine.  Additionally, our presenter will work with counselors and students in small groups at school to incorporate  mindfulness practices into our middle school-to-high school transition program.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and we hope to see you there!

Have a great week!

Casey Danubio
Director of Counseling and Human Development

Our School Musical Is This Week!!

To Life! To life! L'chaiim! Join us for Midwest Academy's production of Fiddler on the Roof.

The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives.

He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love - each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith - and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

This beloved and well-known show is playing at the Carmel Community Playhouse:

Day Date Time
Thursday March 16 7:00 pm
Friday March 17 7:00 pm
Saturday March 18 7:00 pm

There are no charge for tickets. However, seats must be reserved. Please click here to reserve your seats, as space is limited.
FUNdraiser for a Swing Set

Face-Painting the Seniors & Teachers!

This year, the Senior Class is raising money for the Annual Fund and designating these funds for a school swing set. We need everyone's help to raise $2,000 before April 15!

This Friday, March 17,  students will have the chance to paint the faces of the seniors. We're asking students to donate a minimum of one dollar per minute of "painting time" with a maximum of ten minutes, although we'd certainly appreciate any amount more than that to help us reach our goal!

As an incentive, Mentor groups who raise the most money will be able to paint several of our teachers' faces:
  • Raise $300 to paint Mr. Harrison's face
  • Raise $600 to paint Ms. Knapp's face
  • Raise $900 to paint Mr. Inman's face
  • Raise $1,200 to paint Mr. Gailey's face!
As they say, "Many hands make light work." Please help the Senior Class meet its goal to bring a swing set to Midwest Academy. All donations are tax deductible. There is a donation box in the front lobby.
Academic Theme Week -  Next Week

This semester's school-wide theme is INNOVATIONS!

Between March 20-22, we will delve deeper into this topic by creating Pinewood Derby Cars.

Each student will design and build his or her own car as they study the process of innovation and significant innovations through history. We will race our cars on our Race Day, May 5.

Student-Led Conferences will be held March 22-24, beginning the afternoon of March 22.  Please note that school will not be in session  March 23 and 24 to accommodate these conferences.  A link to sign up for these conferences will be provided when parents receive their student's Progress Report on March 15.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your student's mentor.

Help Make a DIFFERENCE at Midwest Academy!

Our ability to provide each Midwest Academy student with the best possible education experience depends on you. The collective participation in annual giving allows us to bridge the $3,500 "tuition gap" per student  (the difference between tuition and the actual cost of education offered). Your tax-deductible contribution helps with this and provides funding for various programs at Midwest! For this reason, your investment is vital to our school's success.

Please take a look at our MWA Wish List - items range from $16 to $240,000, so the choice is yours! Simply click to  Make An Online Donation. You can select the "Area of Greatest Need," or specify an item or subject area on the Wish List. If you would like to send a check, please print and complete this Donation Form and return it to Midwest Academy. Should a particular item exceed its budgeted total, all additional gifts designated for that fund will be applied to the Area of Greatest Need.

This year our goal is to reach 100% parent participation. Every gift is important and makes a difference to each student's educational experience. Thank you in advance for your continued support.
GIRLOLOGY Coming Back to Carmel - March 24

Girlology is coming back to Carmel with a girls' puberty program for girls in grades 4-5 on March 24 from 6-8 pm at IU Health North Hospital. Led by a physician from IU, this 2-hour program helps girls and their parents prepare for puberty by explaining what will happen, using accurate terminology. Most importantly, this program helps parents and their daughters talk about it.
