Charter School Conversation

An article appeared on nola.com (12/9/16) entitled, "Last 5 New Orleans Public Schools Expected to Become Charter Operations". The article indicated Superintendent Henderson Lewis had "received informal expressions of interest from current school and charter leaders to convert some or all of our remaining five network schools (McD35, McMain, Bethune, Franklin Elem. and Mahalia Jackson) to charter schools authorized by OPSB ". A meeting was held with Nicolette London (Executive Director of the Network Schools) to discuss this concept.

Roneagle in the Spotlight

Daryl Womack, Jr., a native of New Orleans, Louisiana is a leading professional barber/stylist and instructor. He is the son of Gail Young Womack, ('73). At 14 years of age, Womack began his barbering career by cutting friends, family and neighbors' hair in his community. He graduated from McDonogh 35 Senior High School in 2002. After McDonogh 35, he attended Sidney Collier Technical College and received his Barbering License from the Louisiana State Board of Barbers and in 2007.  Womack received a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business from LSU. Attending LSU allowed Womack to develop his barbering techniques while building relationships with various professionals and athletes.

It was the onset of his entrepreneurial spirit that inspired Daryl to open Case Closed Barber Shop in New Orleans East, which was one of the most popular post Katrina barber shops. During that period, Womack was able to acquire his instructor's license and began instructing at Park Place Barber College where he based his class on professionalism and interpersonal skills.

For the last decade, Womack has traveled the country honing his skills. From the Bay Area to D.C., he's worked in various markets, studying and mastering the best that barbering has to offer.

In 2010 at the Wahl National Cutting Competition in Chicago, Illinois, he won the title for "Fastest Barber" and gained second place in the "Best Fade" competition. Womack has also received proclamations by the City of New Orleans for his service and dedication to the barbering industry. As an instructor at Park Place Barber College, Womack shares his wealth of knowledge with the next generation of barbers and hopes to continue sharing his experiences, lessons and talents via his mentoring program, Fresh For Success. Daryl was the major contributor for the beautiful mural on the Competition Gym wall.  He also sponsors warm up gear for the Roneagle Basketball teams.

Bringing professionalism back to barbering is the current goal of Daryl and barbering is his passion, driven by his ambitious spirit. He hopes to represent his hometown while displaying his talents to the world in the coming years.
