Upcoming Events from the College and Career Center:

"Harvard, Berkeley, or Bust?" Admissions to Highly Selective Schools: 6-6:50pm | MPR

Followed by:  PATHWAYS (break-out sessions) 7PM - 8PM

How do students who get accepted to the Ivy Leagues, Stanford, Northwestern and the rest of the nation's most selective colleges set themselves apart from the rest of the applicant pool?

Arun Ponnusamy, Head  Counselor & Vice President of Collegewise (and formerly of admissions at the University of Chicago,  Caltech, and UCLA), will discuss this question during his presentation. Students who are interested in  highly selective schools will be provided insight and straight answers about what it will really take to have  a shot at getting in. Mr. Ponnusamy will also address the need and value of building a smart and sensible  college list based on a student's personal needs-not hype or prestige. This presentation should not be  missed, and is appropriate for students/parents grades 9-11. Regardless of what type of school you're  interested in applying to or attending, you'll gain valuable insight into the college admission process in  general.

with Dr. Dana Hodgdon from Torrance Memorial

Parent Presentation by Dana Hodgdon, PhD on the Psychology of Mindfulness
Dr. Dana Hodgdon graduated with a Masters Degree in psychology in 1996 and has held positions at various hospitals throughout Southern California since that time. He received a Ph.D. in Psychology in 2015. For the last eighteen years, he has worked with Torrance Memorial Hospice providing bereavement and end of life therapy. Dana has a significant amount of experience providing therapy surrounding issues of addiction, relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, and bereavement. In addition, Dana provides regular lectures and seminars at Torrance Memorial Medical Center and the surrounding community on topics such as Coping with Stress, Bereavement, Death and Dying, and Mindfulness Based Practices. Although he sees a person's family history as being crucial to understanding the current circumstances, Dana's focus is on a person's strengths based on the notion that much of therapy is centered on regaining balance in the face of imbalance.

Athletics:

Boys Soccer:
Boys Soccer concluded a terrific season with a 2-1 defeat to Granada Hills in the first round of the SoCal Regional Playoff. It was a great season for the Sea Kings as they went 21-11-1 and were CIF SemiFinalists. Congratulations to the players, coaches, and families on a great season!

Boys Golf:
The golf season got underway with a great result at the Glendora Invitational. PV finished tied for 3rd overall, and well clear of local schools like Torrance, Mira Costa, and Peninsula. Great start!

Girls Lacrosse:
The Girls Lacrosse team had their first home game of the season and won in dramatic fashion over Glendale HS. In a high scoring match, the Sea Kings pulled out a 16-15 victory!

Boys Lacrosse:
The Boys Lacrosse team split a pair of games against some visiting state champions. Brighton (Utah) traveled west and PV handed the Utah state champs an 18-9 defeat! On Saturday, PV hosted The Woodlands from Texas. It was a tight game until The Woodlands pulled away to win 14-6. It's been exciting to play teams from out of the area!

Baseball:
It was a strong week for Baseball as the team went 2-0! The team picked up a 12-0 win over Palisades and then a 4--2 victory against Bishop Montgomery.

Softball:
Softball continued their early season difficult schedule with non-league games against local powers San Pedro and West Torrance. San Pedro squeezed out a 1-0 win over the Sea Kings courtesy of a no-hit pitching performance and West Torrance showed their offensive power in a 12-0 victory. PV head into some tournament play this week.

Boys Tennis:
The Tennis team had a match against Woodbridge on Monday and came away with the victory. It will be a busy week ahead with games against West Torrance, Torrance, and Palisades.

Swim:
Swim team had a week without competitions but is preparing for two big home meets this week. On Wednesday, PV will host Santa Monica and on Friday, PV hosts South Torrance.

Track and Field:
The Track and Field teams were busy this week with competitions spanning three days. On Wednesday, the teams hosted Mira Costa and Inglewood. Both the boys and the girls teams defeated Inglewood and lost to Mira Costa.

On Friday and Saturday, the teams competed in the Redondo Invitational. Highlights from the meet included Colton Russell clearing 13' in the pole vault, the girls 4x100m relay team running the 2nd fastest time in school history, and a thrilling boys 4x800m relay that came down to the very end.

Boys Volleyball:
The Boys Volleyball had a non-league game against South Torrance and lost 3-2 in a very close match. The team then headed to San Diego for the Poway tournament over the weekend. With several games on the schedule, the early result was a 2-0 victory over La Jolla on Friday.
