Our Plan in Action: Making Cancer Preventable and Treatable
Please join us for Vermonters Taking Action Against Cancer's 11th Annual Meeting at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier, Vermont on April 12, 2017 from 9am - 3:30pm.
Last year's meeting kicked off the 2020 Vermont Cancer Plan and included a formal recognition of a bi-partisan resolution to support the 2016-2020 Vermont Cancer Plan by the Vermont Legislature. For the past year we have been discussing, promoting, and implementing many of the goals and strategies within that plan. This year's theme, Our Plan in Action: Making Cancer Preventable and Treatable, recognizes the important role that research and community health initiatives play in cancer survivorship. .
Partnerships must continue to grow between researchers, providers, community-based health workers, policymakers, public, and the organizations that facilitate their combined efforts and present a united front in our battle against cancer. While the Vermont Cancer Plan provides a framework for collaborative action the launch of 3-4-50 in VT this past year provided a clear message to drive partnership and promote understanding of the importance of chronic disease prevention. Three behaviors lead to four diseases that result in more than 50 percent of deaths in Vermont.
(Cancer is still our number one killer requiring not just research directed at making it both preventable and treatable, but statewide partnerships that promote and implement strategies to reduce its impact.
Here is what you can expect at VTAAC's Annual Meeting this year:

Our first guest speaker of the morning, UVM Medical Center's Chair in Palliative Medicine, Dr. Robert E. Gramling, will talk about palliative care, pain management, and growing awareness of its broad application

Research in Action will be the focus of lunch as we gather for food and conversation with a panel of Vermont cancer researchers, lawmakers, and survivors. They will discuss some of the latest research in areas of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and survivorship, emphasizing the role of research across all sectors and noting the special importance of the Cancer Moonshot and 3-4-50 in inspiring statewide collaborations

In the afternoon, we will be stretching our legs and crossing the street to the Vermont State House for the reading of a resolution recognizing 3-4-50 and a possible visit with Governor Scott in his Ceremonial Office

Following the resolution Dr. Mark A. Levine, Health Commissioner, will speak in the afternoon on Vermont's cancer priorities and the importance of the Vermont Cancer Plan

The day will close with the VTAAC Impact Awards and special recognition of individuals that are working to advance prevention and treatment statewide
Lunch will be provided and the event is free of charge. REGISTRATON IS REQUIRED and will close at 100 participants so please sign up early.
Participants are also invited to take part in ACS CAN's Vermont Cancer Action Day by joining the Legislative Reception in the Cedar Creek Room of the State House from 4-6pm for their Cancer Survivor Ceremony, Relay for Life CAN Club Awards, Wear Purple Day, and refreshments.
