There were four $5 winners in our CA$H COW contest last month -- the Shea family of Cedar Falls, Kreg Krull of Waterloo, and another customer from Waterloo who won twice! No one found the two jugs labeled with $100 in February, so this month there will be three $100 jugs out there. Best chance to find it is right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!

Hansen's Dairy stores accepting EBT

Hansen's Dairy stores in Waterloo (3015 Kimball Ave.) and Cedar Falls (127 E. 18th St.) are now accepting EBT through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Visit our stores to buy Hansen's Dairy milk, butter and cheese curds and other nutritious, locally sourced foods with SNAP benefits.

Tour season opens March 15

We know the nice weather in February had people itching to come out to the farm for tours. Our season opens March 15!
Visitors to the farm this year will be able to see our newest baby kangaroo,
Rocket (pictured above, foreground). Before Rocket went outside with the other roos, he stayed inside the house, wore diapers and learned how to navigate the house. Check out this
video from our Facebook page to see how he handled our staircase. :)
Tours are available Monday through Saturday
by appointment only.

We offer two options:
Walk-through tour
A guided tour that takes you through the process of getting milk from the farm to your table. See the calves, milking parlor, cow barns, creamery, wallabies, kangaroos and goats, plus enjoy a dish of ice cream. All participants, $8; children 3 and younger, free. Tours can begin by appointment between the hours of 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Efforts will be made to schedule daily groups of walk-through tours together.
Hands-on tour
All the features listed above, plus take a trolley ride around the farm, feed a calf, make homemade butter, milk a cow by hand, and pet the wallabies, kangaroos and goats. Refreshments included. All participants, $12; children 3 and younger, free. Tours begin by reservation only and generally begin at 3:30 p.m.

Catch us at the Local Food Festival this Saturday

After you get your pancakes at Hartman's Maple Syrup Fest this Saturday, join us at the Cedar Valley Local Food and Film Festival to meet local farmers, learn about CSA subscriptions, enjoy free samples, and purchase local products.
Feature film "Vanishing of the Bees" narrated by Ellen Page will begin at 11 a.m. Discussion will follow the film led by local beekeeper Tim Laughlin.

Hansen's Dairy will be joining the tribute to all things bacon at the Cedar Valley BaconFest this month. Come sample our fresh, mild white cheddar cheese curds seasoned with the sweet, smoky flavor of molasses and bacon -- available only at this event!

The March Customer of the Month is
Darrell Rojohn of Grinnell.
Darrell first learned about Hansen's Dairy when he was shopping at New Pioneer Co-op in Coralville.
"You were sampling your products on a day I was in. Been hooked ever since!" Darrell says. "Your milk and butter taste so much fresher than any other dairy, I can't drink any other since I tried yours!"

The March Cow of the Month is Lettice. Like her curly hair? Lettice has given us 3 heifer calves and 3 bull calves. Her lifetime milk production is 148,227 pounds, but what really stands out on her production record is her high butterfat (cream) percentage
. While the herd average is 3.8%, Lettice comes in at 4.58%. That's a lot of butter and ice cream for our customers!
Lettice is a strong cow with an attitude to match. At 8 years old, she's "over the hill" in human years but still has some spunk in her step. Herd manager Blake says she's not a nice cow to work with when someone messes with her routine, but we love her for her hard work anyway!

Cooking with Hansen's

Try a cup of this comforting soup at the end of a chilly March day. Pair it with some hearty bread from Milkbox Bakery, which is sold at our Cedar Falls store!
Creamy Wild Rice and Mushroom Soup

INGREDIENTS
- 2 tablespoons Hansen's butter*
- 1 medium onion, diced (about 1 cup)
- 1 cup chopped white mushrooms
- ½ cup diced carrots
- 3 cups Hansen's milk*
- ¼ cup flour
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups cooked wild rice
- ¾ cup shredded Cheddar cheese*
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley
DIRECTIONS
In a large pot, heat butter over medium heat. Add onions, mushrooms and carrots; sauté until onions are soft (about 10 minutes.)
Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, whisk milk and flour over medium heat, stirring frequently until milk starts to boil. Whisk constantly for one minute or until milk thickens. Pour into onion mixture and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in chicken broth and cooked rice; cook for 10 -15 minutes (or until carrots are soft.)
Ladle into bowls and top each serving with 2 tablespoons cheese and 1 teaspoon parsley.
