Welcome Back from Superintendent Evans
Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! I've enjoyed visiting schools all across Berkeley to share in the excitement of the first few days of school!

We begin this year with great hopes for all we can accomplish together. As a community, we have forged deep connections between students, teachers, staff, and families that are making a difference in the lives of our students. Building community and making our schools welcoming to all students and families creates a strong foundation for our students to learn and grow.
Teachers and Staff are Students Too!
Berkeley teachers, principals, and staff took advantage of all kinds of summer learning opportunities that were available to them; some traveled far and wide to broaden their horizons and expand teaching tools, while others took advantage of learning opportunities available right here at home.

In the week before the opening of school, our professional group of instructional assistants and several special education teachers worked together during a three-day, 18 hour training presented by BUSD's Behavior Specialists (Hannah Acevedo, Anthony Catanzaro, Andrea Jason, Catherine Rodecker, and Shayna Stuempfig). The training introduced strategies for working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and interventions for children with deficits in executive functioning and children who have experienced trauma. Throughout, the training focused on ways to promote and foster greater independence when working with students in inclusion settings, and ways to apply these behavior principles and strategies to support all children in our district.

Summer Modernization Projects Brighten Schools

A number of facility modernization and school yard projects finished up just in time for the start of school.  Two new transitional kindergarten classrooms opened on the first day of school at LeConte Elementary, and John Muir students gathered for lunch in the expanded and remodeled cafeteria. Playground improvements at Rosa Parks and Washington Elementary Schools include new climbing structures and expanded play spaces.

The construction of the new Longfellow Middle School Cafe on Derby Street is making great progress, and will be open to students later this fall.

First All BIHS Assembly Marks 10 Years of Berkeley International High School
Opening week at Berkeley High included a large and spirited assembly of students marking the 10th anniversary of BIHS (Berkeley International High School).

About a thousand people attended a student-led gathering this past Friday afternoon -- the first ever for the entire BIHS community, along with invited parents. It featured videos produced by students, a song performed by BIHS alum Dante Ryan and remarks by current BIHS students who spoke passionately about racial diversity, academic competition as well as ways to further build community this school year. Also speaking were new BIHS Vice Principal Shannon Fierro and Chris Young, who serves as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Coordinator and has been involved with BIHS in various capacities since its inception.

BIHS is one of five learning communities at BHS, with 910 students currently enrolled, including 227 freshmen.
