UTAH HUMANITIES NEWSLETTER

"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses."

April is National Poetry Month and You've Been Celebrating!

On Saturday, Arpil 23rd poetry lovers of all ages came together at the Day-Riverside branch of the Salt Lake Cit Public Library to commemorate Shakespeare's birthday. Teens and adults alike participated by celebrating, creating, and reading poetry.

The day included a workshop and open mic with the Library and Utah Poet Laureate Lance Larsen.

Attendees heard poems performed by Utah Poet Laureate Lance Larsen, the Wasatch Wordsmiths, teen finalists from Poetry Out Loud, Sor Juana finalists, and graduate students from Brigham Young University's poetry program.

The open mic invited everyone to read their own work aloud and ended the event on a successful, creative note.

Celebrating 100 Years of Pulitzer Prizes: Tribune Milestone Event

The Salt Lake Tribune is celebrating two milestones this month: the centennial of the Pulitzer Prizes, and the fact that they signed up the 1,000th participant in their sltrib.com membership program.

These two benchmarks converge later in April as The Tribune invites their members to an evening at Weller Book Works in Trolley Square on Thursday April 28th that will celebrate the influential writing found in Pulitzer Prize-winning novels. A discussion will be led by The Tribune's Jennifer Napier-Pearce, who will introduce some notable Utahns who will share their love of favorite Pulitzer novels. And, of course, there will be birthday cake and an after-party at the nearby Desert Edge Brewery. For tickets and more information, click here for the entire article.

The evening is one of several happenings in 2016 in celebration of the Pulitzer's 100th anniversary as a collaboration between Utah Humanities, UPR, the  Salt Lake Tribune, and KCPW. Campfires is a joint venture of the Pulitzer Prizes Board and the Federation of State Humanities Council in celebration of the 2016 centennial of the Prizes. The initiative seeks to illuminate the impact of journalism and the humanities on American life today, to imagine their future and to inspire new generations to consider the values represented by the body of Pulitzer Prize-winning work. The Campfires Initiative is also supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Ford Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Pulitzer Prizes Board, and Columbia University.

Venture Students Experience Personal Transformation

During the final class of the South Salt Lake City Venture Humanities Course, Roberto Gutierrez and Militza Martinez share words that reflect how they believe Venture has changed them. With their classmates, they dotted the "I Was" board with words like "negative, insecure, numb, close-minded." On the "I Am" board, they filled the space with expressions like "joyful, involved, inspired, motivated."

Encouraged to reflect on their year together, Venture students explained to discussion facilitator Mary Jane Morris that studying the humanities in Venture has helped them grow in confidence, develop curiosity about the world, and be more willing to take risks. Throughout, they felt supported by their teachers and classmates, even when discouraged by difficult assignments. Many are committed to continuing their education.

Want to experience Venture for yourself? Applications are being accepted now for courses offered in Ogden, with Weber State University; South Salt Lake City, with Westminster College, and Cedar City with Southern Utah University.

You Made an Impact!

On March 31, Utahns across the state came together to support local nonprofits in our communities during Love Utah Give Utah. We are very grateful for all the LOVE that Utah Humanities and other amazing local organizations received throughout the day. Together, we have made Utah an even better place to live.  Thanks to 16 champions, UH received $2,425 that we will put to good use turning ideas into action!

Many Thanks

Utah Humanities is grateful for the generous support of many individuals, foundations, and corporations and for public funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the State of Utah, and the Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts, and Parks Fund.

Special thanks to the many Utah legislators who supported both UH's annual appropriation and one-time funds for Museum on Main Street, which will travel to the Castle Dale's Museum of the San Rafael, Fillmore's Territorial Statehouse, the Hyrum Museum, Leeds' Silver Reef Museum, Ogden's Union Station Museum, and the Park City Mining Museum.
