| Spring and Summer at Historic Deerfield Feature Great Programs and Events for All Ages |
Deerfield, Mass. (March 6, 2017)---With the arrival of spring upon us, Historic Deerfield's regular season of operation is about to begin - with a full slate of programs and events at the museum to help enrich visitor experience into the summer season. The regular season at the museum kicks off on Saturday, April 15. The annual Patriot's Day Revolutionary Muster will follow on Saturday, April 22. During this day-long event, visitors will be able to travel back in time and rediscover the history behind the Patriot's Day holiday and the "shot heard 'round the world." Revolutionary times will come to life through demonstrations of period crafts and activities, fife and drum music, and a muster.
Historic Deerfield will offer school vacation week (April 17-23) activities that include daily open hearth cooking demonstrations and a daily program on spring cleaning, at the History Workshop, the museum's educational, interactive space.
Other highlights during spring and summer at the museum include a forum on herbaria, the Dublin Seminar for New England Folklife, featuring "Small World: Toys, Dolls, and Games in New England, 1620-1920," a summer-long educational program on bees, a symposium on the framing of historic structures, and the free summer lecture series,"Summer Living in Early America."
The museum will offer free admission for mothers and grandmothers on Mother's Day, May 14, and for fathers and grandfathers on Father's Day, June 18.

Small World: Toys, Dolls, and Games in New England, 1620-1920

Before the 2x4: New England Framing Options to the Mid-19th Century
July 15, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Historic Deerfield will offer a one-day program focusing on building framing technology used in New England to the mid-19th century. Throughout this time period various ways to erect a structure were practiced with variations occurring for reasons of local tradition, expediency, efficiency, and technology. The day will include Tad Baker exploring archaeological and documentary evidence for early earthfast structures, Jim Garvin reviewing myths and facts surrounding log and garrison construction, Jack Sobon discussing the move from scribe to square rule framing, Jan Lewandoski assessing vertical plank framing evolution, and Bill Flynt talking about the introduction of stack plank, or ribbon construction, in the second quarter of the 19th century. There will also be an opportunity to inspect samples of some of these forms of construction at a reception after the presentations.

During April School Vacation week, visit with our hearth cooks as they prepare family-style dinners like they did in early New England. Help mix batter, churn butter, and learn about the main meal of the day - dinner!

Fresh and Fowl
By the time spring came, early New Englanders had just about used up their supply of stored and preserved food. Discover the meaning of "scraping the bottom of the barrel" and learn why people of the past eagerly awaited the first fresh foods of the season like asparagus, eggs, and milk.

Cooking with Herbs
Experience the sights, sounds, and aromas of hearth cooking while learning about colonial foods and diet. Learn about the use of herbs in cooking, which added flavor and freshness to seasonal dishes. Visit the Cooks' Garden, dedicated to the memory of Margaret Quinn Orloske, and see what's growing.

In a Pickle
Pickles and jam. Lemonade and switchel. During the hot summer, learn how people in early New England kept cool, and preserved summer produce. Our open hearth cooks will demonstrate how to make cooling beverages and foods like pickles and jam.
Family Programs
Spring Cleaning: Scrub, Rub, Polish and Shine

After a long and snowy winter the History Workshop is ready to throw open its doors and launch into a real old fashioned spring cleaning. Roll up your sleeves and join us to learn how to wash clothes using a wooden wash board and tub, and make some soap while you scrub. The cast iron pots and the silver need polishing and the dusty rugs need a thorough cleaning with the rug beater. Whitewash a wall, sweep the floors with a homemade broom and use a feather duster. "Spring" into spring, with a cleaning fling!
Get the Buzz on Bees!

Come to the History Workshop to learn the sweet story of honey bees. From pollination to producing wax and honey, bees have been important in Deerfield from colonial times right up to the present. Currently, there are many concerns about honey bees and we want to provide up-to-date information on honey bee decline and its possible causes. Our bee related activities will be fun for everyone. Join us for wax candle making, honey tasting, creating a honey bee art project and planting pollinator friendly flower seeds.

Hours and Admission
Historic Deerfield opens for the regular season on Saturday, April 15, 2017, when it will be open daily from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. through December 22, 2017 (closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.) The Memorial Libraries are open Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. The Museum Gift Shop & Bookstore will be open daily beginning April 15, from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission, which includes all museum houses, the History Workshop, the Apprentice's Workshop, and exhibitions at the Flynt Center of Early New England Life, is $18 for adults (18+), $5 for children (6-17), under age 6, Deerfield/South Deerfield residents, and members are free.
