Spring Break
Spring Break is less than two weeks away (March 13-17th)! We know it's tough, but hang in there. Take the time to breathe and regroup for the remainder of the semester. You'll be a little over halfway through!
Keep in mind that RSS and most other offices on campus will be closed on the last day of Spring Break, Friday, March 17th.

Student Spotlight - Zane DeBilt
Hello, my name is Zane DeBilt and I am a senior studying Japanese with a minor in history. I am from the Southwestern part of Alaska, and through my time here at UAF, have had many incredible experiences. In the 2014-2015 school year, I was able to study abroad for a year in Japan, and that memory is one of the best of my time in university so far. I aim to pursue a Master's degree in International Business with Marketing, and will be attending the University of Stirling in Scotland to attain that goal.
Before I head to the U.K., I hope to continue to gain knowledge and experience in business through internships. I have applied to an internship in Seattle, which will take place over the summer with the sales department of a company I have had the good fortune to work with in previous years. The real-world experience I gain will help me in my studies once I enter graduate school. UAF has been an awesome experience, and I would like to thank everyone I have come across for making it so.

Festival of Native Arts
The 44th Annual Festival of Native Arts, dedicated to the late Riba DeWilde, is this week! From March 2-4th, join UAF in the celebration of cultures from all across Alaska. This year's theme is "Carry your drum, carry your culture."
This year's event will feature over twenty different dance groups on the main stage at the Davis Concert Hall, fourteen different workshops in the Wood Center, and tons of vendors selling Alaska Native art in the Fine Arts Complex. You can find out what else is happening at

Major Mania!
This year's Major Mania will take place from 11am-2pm on Friday, March 10 in the Wood Center. Take this opportunity to explore different majors that UAF has to offer and talk to representatives from each program about how they can work for you! This is a great opportunity, especially if you're unsure about what you want to be doing.

Fairbanks Native Association Annual Meeting
The Fairbanks Native Association Annual Meeting will be held on Friday, March 10 at 6:00pm in the Chief David Salmon Tribal Hall. At this event, you can learn about the services that FNA provides, participate in the Board of Elections, enjoy some good food, and qualify for door prizes.

Dennis Demmert Award
For 23 years, we've been presenting the Dennis Demmert Award to deserving staff and faculty members who have helped support Alaska Native Education. We need your input to keep it going!
Do you know of an awesome staff or faculty member that you want to have recognized for supporting Alaska Native Students? Get your nomination form in for the Dennis Demmert Award! First Alaskans Institute
Are you looking for a leg up in your field and want to have a higher chance of gaining employment after college? An internship can really help you do just that. One of the many organizations that offer internships is the First Alaskans Institute and they happen to be recruiting!
Apply by March 10th to be considered for a ten week, paid internship that will allow you to explore and understand Indigenous values-based leadership skills, grow your professional network, and be placed anywhere across Alaska. If you're interested in learning more, visit

VITA Tax Assistance Program
Great Alaska Accounting People (GAAP) provides free income tax assistance, preparation, and electronic filing as part of the IRS Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA). If you need help with your taxes, stop by 319 Bunnell Building on March 4th, 25th, April 1st, 8th, and 15th between 10am and 2pm.

 Permanent Fund Dividend
We're headed toward a new Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend dispersal! But, before you can take a bite out of that pie, you have to apply. It's easy to apply for the PFD using the State of Alaska website. Just click on this link

The Academic Advising Center offers a large number of workshops designed to promote study and university skills important to student success. Upcoming topics include, effectively reading a textbook, reducing math anxiety, successful test taking, note taking skills and many more!

We have tons of help on campus, at CTC, and even online! Whether you need to talk to someone about Math, English, Science, or a Foreign Language, you're covered. Visit our

In the Gathering Room at RSS, we have tutors from the American Indian Science and Engineering Society to help you with Math, Science, and Engineering questions (schedule here).
We also have tutors from 2-4:00pm Monday through Thursday from the Writing Center, another from the Speaking Center on Tuesdays from 2-4:00pm, and a handful from the Frontier Baptist Church who can help with Chemistry, Math, Physics, English, and Writing (schedule here).

Join a Club!
 A big part of college life is getting involved in things that you're interested in. Not only do you get a chance to make a difference or submerge yourself into your hobbies, but you get to do it with other like-minded people who have similar goals in mind. Those friendships that you create may be just the thing you need to forge ahead. Also, a ton of clubs provide free food, so there's that.

Aarigaa is a group for students to come together to learn about God, worship, and spend time with one another.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to come to all of our events! That's why we make it super easy for you to find out what's going on. We put as much as we can in this newsletter, but because it only goes out once a month, there are some events that are inevitably absent. Because of this, we curate an event calendar on our website. We also frequently update our Facebook page, so be sure to like us! Finally, we send text messages on the day of our main events.
