February Students of the Month
Nicholas Pittman - 2017

Math Honor Society President, Nicholas Pittman has developed a passion for Physics.  Nicholas hopes to attend either Yale, Princeton, or Cornell to study Quantum or Mathematical Physics.  Two of Nicholas’ favorite classes at North were AP Chemistry and AP Physics C.  He loved AP Chemistry with Dr. Wilhelm because of her great teaching, the interesting labs, and the intriguing subject matter being taught in the class.  AP Physics C was a favorite because of Mr. Quinn’s ridiculous jokes.  Nicholas has been in Jazz Band for the past three years and is a senior guitarist.  He recently joined the swim team this winter and became President of the Math Honor Society.  Nicholas is also a member of the Science and English Honor Societies, every science and math league, ski club, and the ping-pong club.  Outside of school, Nicholas tutors math part-time.  His favorite two memories from North Hunterdon were spending afternoons and lunch periods playing guitar with Mr. Andrews, missing the swim bus with Ethan L., and chasing the bus across the school on foot in a downpour.

Jacquelyn Twaddle - 2017

Senior, Jacquelyn Twaddle plans to attend either New York University, Rutgers University, Drexel University, Temple University, Fordham University, or Villanova University to study Mathematics.  Jacquelyn is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Mathematics Honor Society, English Honor Society, and Science Honor Society.  She participates in Track and Field and is a member of Interact where she helped with the Special Olympics and earned a Silver Community Service Award.  She has also made it to the Senior Level in Girl Scouts where she earned the Silver Award by spending over 50 hours planning and hosting a Mother’s Day Tea event.  Jacquelyn’s favorite class at North was Algebra II Trig Honors her sophomore year with Mr. Forte.  She loved this class because it had many fun people and she enjoyed the math that was taught.  Mr. Forte was a good teacher and he made the class fun.  Jacquelyn’s favorite memories at North are spending time and laughing with her friends, skiing with her family, going to meets with her friends from track, and competing in hurdles.

February Athletes of the Month
Cole Marra - 2017

Senior, Cole Marra started wrestling in second grade with the North Hunterdon Wrestling Club.  Cole wrestled with the club until the ninth grade when he joined the high school team.  He still wrestles with the club in the off-season where he travels to competitions in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and some local tournaments.  Cole wrestles at 152 lbs and has focused on becoming more aggressive on his feet this year.  He is a District 15 Champion, a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex County Champion, and placed second at the John Goles tournament.  Cole describes this season as the most fun of his career and enjoys being the team captain.  Outside of wrestling, Cole also played soccer the past four years where he lettered for the varsity team twice.  He is also part of National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Latin Club, and Interact.  Cole is going to miss all his coaches and all his teammates very much.  North has been a great home for him for the past four years.  He wishes the best of luck to the wrestling team and soccer team next year.  Cole plans to study engineering at either UVA, Northeastern, UMD, or Rutgers.

Kristina Harrel - 2017

Point guard and shooting guard, Kristina Harrel has been playing basketball since she was in first grade.  She has been a member of the girls’ basketball program for four years and is a three-year varsity letter winner.  This is her second year being a Varsity Basketball Captain and averages 11.2 points per game.  Kristina was also Captain for the Varsity Soccer Team this year.  She has been playing soccer since Kindergarten.  Her teammate Jordan Beneducci was co-captain with her in both sports.  Kristina is a member of Student Ambassadors, National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society.  Her favorite part of playing basketball is playing defense.  She believes that all offensive accomplishments are a result of playing good defense.  It creates a lot of positive energy to be able to stop a good team from scoring.  Kristina plans to play varsity basketball at Roanoke College next year.  She will major in Sports Management.

Art Student Showcase
Bree Zhang '18

Drawing has always fascinated me, and I have explored a range of mediums - oil, watercolor, graphite, pastels, charcoal - since my conception into the art world. Of my work, my graphite drawings are more hyper-realistic while my paintings are more expressive with high contrast, strong brushstrokes, and dynamic energy. I am currently playing with the theme of fusing fantasy with reality by shrinking humans to the size of everyday objects and having them interact with each other and their surroundings. Since I work in a more spontaneous fashion, I haven't yet planned out all my artwork, so I look forward to where this direction will take me.

February was Black History Month and the North Hunterdon High School Social Studies Department celebrated by recognizing important people and events that have shaped our country's history.  The following are some highlights of activities that took place during this past month.

  • Advanced Early American: The students worked on a poster project about the Abolitionist movement and the underground railroad. Students were assigned key figures and events and will be teaching the class about their assigned subtopic.

  • Advanced Early American: Students examined the abolition movement of the 19th century. Students also examined a variety of primary sources from this time period getting a full understanding of different issues surrounding slavery. Students will then use basic government lessons tracing abolition movement to the civil rights movement of the 50's and 60's and discuss modern day issues like affirmative action. Essential questions will include: Given our nation's controversial history surrounding slavery, abolition, and civil rights, are programs like Affirmative Action necessary to help minorities advance in our society?

  • AP US HISTORY:  Throughout the month, students explored various events that played a pivotal role in the history of our nation. These events included the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, and the push for anti-lynching laws in the 1930s.

Black History Month
  • Modern American History Advanced: Students will be completing a "Civil Rights IPOD project".  Students will create their own playlist of songs and link those songs to events from the Civil Rights Movement (Rosa Parks, Montgomery Bus Boycott, MLK, etc.). The students choose five songs (can be modern or from that era) but they have to provide examples of how their chosen songs relate to their assigned events. For each song, they detail the relevancy of the song and provide a short synopsis of their event. They are then allowed to play 1-2 songs in class and present their findings.
  • Honors Modern American: Students completed an activity on influential African Americans during the Revolutionary Period and after.  Students will also be doing a webquest that focuses on Harriet Tubman's life and influence.

  • World History: Students discussed the Battle of Adwa, a battle during the Age of European Imperialism, in which the Ethiopians were able to successfully repel and defeat the Italians in battle - saving their nation from being imperialized and proving wrong the 19th and 20th century superiority beliefs held by many westerners towards indigenous peoples.

  • AP Govt.: At the beginning of the month, students finished discussing the expansion of the electorate throughout U.S. History. Students discussed constitutional amendments like the 13th Amendment and federal legislation like the 1965 voting rights act. Students watched a variety of speeches made by Dr. Martin Luther King.
