READ THE BIBLE WITH THE BISHOP IN 2017!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As another part of my promise to better serve you, I am pleased to present another major initiative from the Offices of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. This Bible App will help us all to feel connected, provides a platform for participating in the Bishop's Bible Challenge, and perhaps most importantly is a powerful tool for you to read or hear the Word of God in 1,000 languages. With the Bible App, many now have access to the word of God in their primary language. Reading the Bible together as a diocesan community will have a life changing effect. The importance of Christian people using Holy Scripture as a foundation for daily life is hard to overstate. Who we are as the People of God flows directly from our worship, doctrine, and liturgy, which are all rooted in Scripture. To know the Bible better, is to know ourselves as the People of God better, to know our mission to the world better, and to know our faith better. We are here to help and to serve you, and this mobile app is another important step in showing the kind of innovation and emphasis that is placed on equipping our congregations to build the Kingdom of God.

The Rt. Rev. Daniel G.P. Guti érrez
XVI Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania

Forums/Discussion Groups

Sunday Faith Forum at 11:15 a.m. in MacColl Auditorium at St. Thomas' Church, Whitemarsh on March 5 - Who Knows More about Human Origins, Paul or Darwin? Human evolution continues to be controversial among most Christians, since it is hard to square science with the Bible. What needs to be kept in mind with respect to evolution holds for any instance where science and the Bible "collide:" The Bible is not a science book but a story of faith that still speaks to us today, but that is written in an ancient mode with ancient assumptions. Pete Enns, Professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University, who has written, edited, and contributed to nearly 20 books, including The Sin of Certainty: Why God Desires Our Trust More than Our "Correct" Beliefs and The Evolution of Adam: What the Bible Does and Doesn't Say about Human Origins, will help us explore the intersection of religion and science.

Requests for Items

A Call for Socks to Benefit the Homeless. Did you know there are about 300 homeless people in Bucks County? Homeless people don't have frequent access to laundry facilities. So when their socks get wet, they risk getting trench foot, or even frostbite. They need dry socks to stay healthy. Last year the parish of St. Philip's collected well over 500 pairs of socks to distribute. This year, the Bucks County Herald has teamed up with St. Philip's Episcopal Church, New Hope, to appeal to the whole community to donate socks for the area's homeless people. We welcome all donations of new socks for men and socks, stockings, leggings and panty hose for women. Some children's socks are also welcome, but primarily those for adults. Help give Christmas Stockings a new meaning: when you are out shopping for the holiday, buy some socks for the homeless in our own community. Place them into the big blue tub on the porch of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 10 Chapel Road, New Hope (the historic one-room schoolhouse at the corner of River Road and Chapel Road).

Volunteers

Spiritual Direction Offering. What is "spiritual direction"? Most basically, it is sitting down with a trusted Christian person in a confidential setting and discussing one's prayer life, what is happening in one's Christian pilgrimage, and how God may be acting and making Godeself known in one's life. It can take place once a month or once every few months, even on an irregular basis. This is not about interminable psychotherapy, but rather relatively infrequent meetings which can enable real spiritual friendship to develop over a period of time. If you think you might be interested in exploring spiritual direction, you may talk with or contact Rev. Jill McNish at 973-819-5191. As well as having a Ph.D. in Psychology and Religion from Union Seminary, she received training in spiritual direction at the Center For Christian Spirituality at General Seminary.
