U.S. Travel Band Raises Questions for Athletes
British Olympian
Mo Farah and his team spent much of the weekend sorting through the details of the
executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Friday concerning immigration and travel. Farah raised concerns that he might not be able to return to his home in Portland, Oregon, following a training stint in Ethiopia.
Farah may be the highest profile runner to speak out after the White House announcement, but officials staging the 2021 world championships in the U.S. and bidding to host the 2024
Olympics in Los Angeles are also facing uncertainty.
Trump's executive order suspended entry of refugees to the United States for 120 days, and it has also barred entry into the U.S. for 90 days for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Those who hold dual citizenship in one of the seven countries are also blocked from entering.
The bid for Los Angeles to host the 2024
Olympics
could also face extra scrutiny.
