Spring Detox Salad
Jill Taylor, CNP, NNCP
Not only is this a quick and easy salad that you can whip up almost anywhere, it's full of good fats and essential nutrients to power you up for what's ahead in your afternoon and keep you feeling full.
Arugula is a flavour-packed dark green leafy vegetable full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that is excellent for supporting our hard working and often under-appreciated liver.  Cucumbers are refreshing and delicious and a great source of vitamins/antioxidants C and A, as well as folic acid and a host of minerals.  The avocado in this recipe provides a rich and creamy texture but also an excellent source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, B vitamins and the wonderful antioxidant vitamin E.  Cilantro and parsley are well known for their detoxifying properties so a generous handful of each is included!
We can't get enough of this tasty salad, whether we're on a detox or not!
Ingredients
(use organic ingredients where possible)
  • 1 bunch of Arugula or mixed leafy greens
  • ½ cucumber
  • 1 medium-sized avocado
  • Handful of fresh cilantro and parsley
  • Optional: seaweed flakes
Dressing
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
Combine all ingredients in a bowl, drizzle with the dressing and enjoy!
DETOX WITH EPSOM SALT BATH
Jude Lupuliak RMT
Epsom salt derives its name from a bitter saline spring located at Epsom in Surrey, England where it was first distilled from water. Unlike table salt (sodium chloride) it is actually a mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. MgSO4 can be broken down into magnesium, sulphur and oxygen.
Benefits of Epsom Salts
There are many benefits of using Epsom salts regularly, including the following:
  • By soaking in an Epsom Salt bath for 20 minutes, your magnesium levels can be increased.

  • Improves blood sugar levels. Regular intake of Epsom salts, either orally or transdermally, can help to regulate blood sugar, lowering the risk of diabetes and improving daily energy levels.
  • Reduces stress by relaxing the muscles
  • Eliminates toxins
  • Relieves constipation
  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Heel Spur Aid
Pain and inflammation associated with a heel spur can be relieved  by soaking the foot in a warm bath with Epsom salt.
Possible Side Effects of Epsom Salt Usage
Common side effects of excessive intake of Epsom salt include:
  • mild gastrointestinal upset including nausea, abdominal cramping and/or diarrhea.
Serious side effects of magnesium sulfate overdose include the following:
  • allergic reaction (rash; hives; itching; breathing difficulties; chest tightness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue)
  • dizziness
  •  flushing
  •  faintness
  •  irregular heartbeat
  •  muscle paralysis or muscle weakness
  •  severe drowsiness, or sweating.
Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms after using Epsom salt. Serious side effects of Epsom salt are rare when used in recommended dosages.
As always, if you have any questions or health concerns, check with a doctor before internal or external use of Epsom salt.
Epsom Salt Bath
Use 2 cups per tub. Dissolve the salts in hot water first and then fill the tub with warm water (at a temperature that will allow you to soak for 20 minutes). Some people have been deficient for so long that the full quantity is too much of a shock, and you will see negative reactions. In the beginning, a person may react with hyperactivity, irritability or moodiness.  With the right amount, most people find the salts very calming and relaxing.  Soak in the bath a good 20 minutes preferably before bedtime. It is okay to let the salts dry on the skin. They may leave a dry clear white powder. If it is too itchy or irritating, just rinse them off. If the skin feels too dry, use lotion or oils to moisturize.
