Annual Chamber Banquet recap
A large crowd turned out for the Chamber's 41st Annual Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening, February 28th at the Dayton Community Center. One of the event's highlights was the announcement of Citizen of the Year for Dayton and Liberty. Caroline Wadzeck was the winner for Dayton, while Ann Rogers brought home the award for Liberty. Both ladies were very deserving of their honors.

Congressional awards were also given to each recipient by Kelly Waterman, Director, District 5, Office of Congressman Brian Babin.

New this year was an award given for leadership and service excellence in business. The honor, appropriately named the Sherry Mettlen Leadership-Business Award, was given to Carol Bond Health Foods, which was Sherry's business for several years before her passing in January, 2017. Sherry's family members were on hand to accept the award.

Mike Little served as emcee for the evening's events. Incoming Chamber directors were announced, and outgoing directors for 2016 were honored with plaques. Past Chairperson James Reese presented the gavel to incoming Chairperson Kandace Wolfe. Anne Marie Smesney provided the vocal for the National Anthem and later led the crowd in "God Bless America". The MCJROTC-Dayton Color Guard presented the colors with the American and Marine Corps. flags. Pastor Don Gibson of Mercy Gate Church in Mont Belvieu gave the opening prayer.

Awards were presented to Eliza Guidry for coordinating the bus trips to Coushatta Resort and Casino, and for "volunteerism, constant support, encouragement and dedication to the programs and projects" of the Chamber; Cliff Richey and Bill Monk for providing the sound and music for Chamber events and for other clubs, organizations and churches in the area; and to Flatline Cookers, the cooking team of Liberty County EMS, who prepared and served the great meal at the Chamber's Liberty-Dayton '500' auction last year.

Guest speaker Chad Prather entertained the crowd with his own unique brand of humor, and some poignant reminders of working together for the common good.

The Chamber wishes to thank everyone who came out to enjoy the evening, our sponsors, guest speaker Chad Prather and all who worked to make this year's banquet a great success.

Points Map now available online
A new Google map, based partially on inquiries received at the Chamber offices from both residents and visitors in the area, has been added to our website at libertydaytonchamber.com. The map currently has several layers plotting locations for landfills, birding sites, accommodations for events, polling sites, and courthouse annex locations. It will be updated and altered over time as needed. You can view the new map at libertydaytonchamber.com under "Area > Points Map."

We'd also like to remind visitors to the website that Chamber members in our online database are automatically plotted on an embedded Google map along with their member listing. Simply locate the business on the "Member Directory" page, click on the blue "More Info" button and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Information on I-9 forms for employers
Form I-9 is used for verifying the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment in the United States. All U.S. employers must ensure proper completion of Form I-9 for each individual they hire for employment in the United States. This includes citizens and noncitizens. Both employees and employers (or authorized representatives of the employer) must complete the form. On the form, an employee must attest to his or her employment authorization. The employee must also present his or her employer with acceptable documents evidencing identity and employment authorization. The employer must examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s) an employee presents to determine whether the document(s) reasonably appear to be genuine and to relate to the employee and record the document information on the Form I-9. The list of acceptable documents can be found on the last page of the form. Employers must retain Form I-9 for a designated period and make it available for inspection by authorized government officers.

More information can be found at: USCIS News Release and I-9 Central.

Reminder about Liberty Bells
The Liberty Rotary Club continues to offer concrete Liberty Bells for sale to help with two current Rotary projects. The 300-pound bells are $300 each, with one half of the profits going to Rotary's world wide polio-free program inoculating children all over the globe. The remaining profits are earmarked for a new bell tower for the full-size Liberty Bell replica now on display at the Humphrey's Cultural Center, since the former bell tower was damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008. For information or to place an order contact any Liberty Rotarian, call 832.477.7314 or contact KSHN Radio at 936.336.5793.
